It appears that local director Carter Thomas loves Christmas. The Crescenta Valley High School graduate, an accomplished actor, played the character of Tiny Tim in productions of “A Christmas Carol” for 18 years. He has taken his experience and training to direct local productions of “A Christmas Carol” for the last couple of years, including during the pandemic.

“We did a virtual production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ during COVID,” Thomas said. “I’ve seen how much joy it brings to people.”

Thomas brings the magic of the Christmas story to the stage at Highlands Church, formerly La Crescenta Baptist and Community Life Church, at 4441 La Crescenta Ave. beginning Dec. 9 through Dec. 17.

This is the second year that Thomas brought the production to La Crescenta – and he hopes it’s not the last.

“I want to bring theatre to La Crescenta on a permanent basis,” said Thomas adding Highlands is one of the best venues he’s worked in.

Thomas’ “A Christmas Carol” is noted as a fresh, beautiful adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale though Thomas promises that the production retains the charm of the classic tale.

“It’s a really great production,” he said. “It’s the traditional ‘A Christmas Carol’ people know and love with the incorporation of over a dozen classic holiday songs.”

Thomas expanded on the story saying this production in particular connects people to the performance.

“It has a new set and new lighting, which enhances the story,” he said.

The family-friendly production also has whimsical costumes, dancing and timeless carols – all which add to the good cheer shared among audience members. The transforming story also takes a deeper look at the importance of how accepting community into people’s lives creates happier and richer lives.

Looking ahead, Thomas said that directing a production of one of his favorite musicals – “Peter Pan” – would be something he’d like to tackle.

“I have a heart for this community,” he said, “and a passion to bring theatre here. I want to create a hub for people to enjoy.”

“A Christmas Carol” is at Highlands Church from Dec. 9 through Dec. 17. Reserve tickets are available at www.highlandsla.com or by calling (818) 249-5832. Tickets are also available at the door.
