The Verdugo Hills Council of Boy Scouts of America held its annual recognition dinner at Homenetmen Ararat Chapter Hall on Feb. 2. Among the awards presented was the North Star Award presented to local civic leader Steve Pierce. Chris Waldheim, last year’s recipient, presented the prestigious award to Pierce. The North Star Award is presented by local Councils of the Boy Scouts of America on behalf of the National Court of Honor for non-registered volunteers who have made a significant contribution to Scouting.

For Glendale police chief Carl Povilaitis received the Spurgeon Award, which is presented to volunteers who have rendered outstanding leadership to the Exploring program either as an Explorer post adult leader or as a district, division, or Council Exploring adult volunteer. Povilaitis was presented the award by last year’s recipient Michelle Gonzalez.
