Soroptimist was formed in 1921 in Oakland. The name, loosely translated from Latin means best for women. The local organization is one of five federations that make up Soroptimist International. Soroptimist has clubs in more than 122 countries throughout the world and over 75,000 members.
In April the local club will be celebrating its 80th anniversary. Its annual fundraiser Bras for a Cause is celebrating its 20th anniversary on April 1 at the Oakmont Country Club. The decorating of bras has been the penultimate event around which the event is staged. The bras are true works of art designed by local artist, friends and colleagues. We have four community members who will serve as Bra Judges: Lola Abrahamian, president of the Camino Real Region of Soroptimist; Lisa Brookes, executive director of the Glendale College Foundation; Fire Chief Timothy Ernst and Ann Ransford, board president of the Glendale Community College District. Soroptimist will be honoring Adventist Medical Center of Glendale and Glendale Management Association with its Support Award for their continued support in the last 20 years.
Charted in 1943, Soroptimist International of Glendale has donated millions of dollars to the community, supporting programs and partnerships that improve the lives of women and girls. The members are active leaders in Glendale, helping women achieve their career goals through the Live Your Dream education and training awards, providing girls career mentoring and career exploration through the Dream It, Be It programs, introducing forums on human trafficking and providing grants to impactful, service providers in the Glendale area.
On March 16, as a result of the support and generosity of funds raised at last year’s event, education grants will be awarded to seven women through the Live Your Dream Education and Training Awards. These women provide the primary financial support for their families and have overcome incredible challenges including poverty, domestic and sexual violence, trafficking and addiction. They are on a path to a new life and the Live Your Dream Awards supports them in achieving their goals. Additionally, Service Grant Awards will be presented to five local non-profit organizations that provide skills training, support, shelter, health and wellness of women and girls.
