GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. This week on March 17 learn the history of Irish traditions brought to the U.S. when Mary O’Keefe makes a presentation to the Club.

The cost to attend, which includes lunch and program, is $20.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

BURBANK AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY

The Burbank African Violet Society will be having its next monthly club meeting today, Thursday morning, March 16 at 10 a.m. at the Little White Chapel Christian Church, 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank. The program will be a DVD presentation on “Growing African Violet Trailers” by Dr. Bill Price. 

There are a few different types of African violet trailers miniature African violet trailers, semi-miniature African violet trailers and standard size African violet trailers. African violet trailers are quite popular and easier to grow than the other African violets are African violet trailers have more than one crown.

The learning lab will be on capillary matting style of watering African violets. Questions and answers will follow.

There are raffle and silent auction tables. Refreshments are served and friendships are made. Guests are always welcome to attend the meetings. Please come and learn more about growing America’s favorite houseplant – the African violet.

CELEBRATING WOMEN WHO TELL OUR STORIES

Since 1965, US presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made in a variety of fields over the course of history.

Military Veteran Affairs of the County of Los Angeles will honor WWII Army veteran Bea Abrams Cohen (perhaps the oldest veteran in this area who passed away at 105) at “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,” an event focusing on the philanthropic efforts of Cohen on Saturday, March 18 at Bob Hope Patriotic Hall, 1816 S. Figueroa St. in Los Angeles. Cohen will also be honored by the dedication of a resource room at Patriotic Hall, the first room named after a women veteran within the facility.

Speakers at the event include LA County Supervisor, fifth district, Kathryn Barger and Virginia Wimmer, deputy secretary of CalVet Women Veteran Affairs, among others.

ANNUAL CAR SHOW

The Glendale Elks #1289 27^th annual charity car show will be held on Sunday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Glendale. The public is invited to come inspect an array of cars ranging from a 1914 Ford Motel T to custom modified cars of many descriptions. Breakfast and lunch will be served throughout the day plus there will be raffles and a silent auction.

GAMES PEOPLE PLAY

The community is invited to play games with supporters of Bolton Hall Museum on March 25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The afternoon of exploring and playing family friendly board and card games is suitable for ages 6 to 96. Based on the Museum’s current exhibit, Toys & Games, Past & Present, young people are invited to see and learn vintage games and adults will relive the games of their youth.

This event is co-sponsored by the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council and is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

VILLAGE POETS READING CONTINUE WITH TOTI O’BRIEN AND LINDA DOVE

Village Poets of Sunland-Tujunga invites poets and friends of poetry to the second of this year’s Monthly Reading held in-person on Sunday, March 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum, located at 10110 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga.  In March poets Toti O’Brien and Linda Dove will be featured.

Toti O’Brien is the Italian accordionist with the Irish last name. Born in Rome, living in Los Angeles, she is an artist, musician and dancer. She is the author of “Other Maidens,” “An Alphabet of Birds” “In Her Terms” and others.

Linda Dove holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature and teaches college writing. She is also an award-winning poet of four books: “In Defense of Objects” (2009), “O Dear Deer,” (2011), “This Too” (2017), and “Fearn” (2019), as well as the scholarly collection of essays, “Women, Writing.” She lives on the eastern edge of Los Angeles where she serves as the faculty editor of MORIA Literary Magazine at Woodbury University.

Two segments of open mic will be available and refreshments will be served. Suggested donation is $5 per person for the cost of refreshments and to donate to the Little Landers Society.

TASTE OF THE GRAPE NORTHWEST FUNDRAISER

A fundraiser supporting Los Altos Auxiliary of Sycamores is having its 12^th annual wine tasting event – Taste of the Grape Northwest – on Sunday, April 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Thursday Club outdoor patio, 4400 Woodleigh Lane in La Cañada.

Tickets include the tasting of food catered by Porta Via and samples of seven curated wines from the Pacific Northwest.

Tickets are $100 each; sponsorships are available. There will also be a wine pull, fund-a-need opportunities and a select in-person silent auction.

The Los Altos Auxiliary works with Sycamores to provide care, compassion and hope at the El Nido campus for youth who are from extremely vulnerable situations.

VHHS PLANS REUNION

“Team 74” is planning a 50th high school reunion in 2024. Friends and graduates of Verdugo Hills High School are invited to attend to trade stories of family, careers, adventures and anything else.

Currently Team 74 is in the planning phase of collecting names and numbers of classmates and putting together a database; emails from classmates can be received at clsof74reunion@yahoo.com. Information should include a mailing address, cell number and graduate’s name at graduation (if different than now).

A list of frequently asked questions will be provided to keep everyone updated as the reunion plans move forward. Those who belong to various VHHS groups will see redundant information to ensure all classmates are notified and have an opportunity to attend.

At this time the FB VHHS groups will be the reunion information outlet until a more focused site is created.
