Car lovers have one thing in common – they love to congregate and show off their prized vehicles. That’s one reason a fundraising car show event is the perfect way to get the community mingling.
Even those who can’t find enough folks with true classics, there are people in the community who are proud of their lowered vehicles, decked out time-honored “modernish” autos produced in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s and original antique motorcars. People will come out to admire the cars, and some might even be willing to bring out their old jalopies if there is a fun category to recognize oldies but goodies on wheels.
Organizer Jack Wright was told by one person that, at one time, he owned a brand-new burgundy-colored 1970 Chevy Malibu convertible with a four-on-the-floor.
“If you had it today, the car would be worth a small fortune!” said Wright.
The Elks Lodge Auto Show on Sunday collected revenue from those who displayed their cars, participated in silent auctions and raffles and bought food (breakfast, lunch and snacks was for sale). Prizes included a chance to win an expensive bottle of wine or brandy, a stay in a cabin up at Lake Arrowhead and even a multi-tasking exercise bike.
Funds raised provide scholarships for deserving Glendale High School students and those who attend John Marshall, Benjamin Franklin and Eagle Rock HS. The money raised is also spent on dictionaries that are given to third grade students in Glendale and La Crescenta elementary schools. Funds also provide Christmas gifts and meals for families in need.
For 14 years, the Glendale Elks Lodge hosted this major fundraising event.
“We also help Boy Scouts, the Little League, and veterans,” said Chairperson George McCullough. “We distribute flyers at other car shows such as the Glendale Cruise Night. Anyone can join the Elks Lodge though most members are locals who live within a 10-mile radius.”
Elks Lodge 1289 is located at 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/9xudud2e.
