Lincoln Elementary first graders and student council members in Nicolas James’ class took an after-school field trip to the Deukmejian Wilderness Park to visit the recently opened Stone Barn Nature Center. The Stone Barn Nature Center is located at 3429 Markridge Road in Glendale.

They were met by Steve Yagulyan, facility attendant, and Jacquie Waldman, coordinator, the Stone Barn Nature Center, who gave the students an introduction to the Stone Barn Nature Center.

“The Stone Barn was originally built between 1905-1915 by the Le Mesnager family,” they were told “Throughout the years, it has served as a winery, stables, residence and now a nature center.” The students learned about what animals and plants live and grow in the local area.

Waldman gave the first graders a tour of the Nature Center that also included information about all the trails located near the Nature Center and the wildfires that destroyed the Stone Barn in 1933.

The tour ended in a kid-friendly area were the students got hands-on experience and learned about tectonic movement that created our mountains, and the plants and bugs native to the hillsides, and the amazing creatures that roam in the local area.

Stone Barn Nature Center hours of operation are Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
