Letters to the Editor

To CVHS Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra

I cannot tell you how touched I was by the story of your memorable performance at Carnegie Hall in New York (“CVIM Returns from Carnegie Hall Performance,” News, March 16).

In 1991, I joined the Granada Hills Chorale for a perform of the “Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré and the spectacular coronation scene from “Boris Godunov” by Modest Mussorgsky at Carnegie Hall.

I shared your experience of walking into the great hall for the first time and standing in the same arc of space where composer Peter Tchaikovsky conducted the inaugural concert in 1891.

No wonder that your parents cried when they listened to the great classical music that you played in this legendary concert hall, which violinist Isaac Stern saved from demolition in 1960.

Sorry that I missed many of the New York landmarks that you saw, including the dazzling New Amsterdam Theatre – of the last art nouveau theatres in the world.

Tell your parents and teachers how grateful you are – and always will be – for their help in sending you to Carnegie Hall. Trust me: You will never have another day, another experience, like it.

Grateful for Walking Audit Story

Thank you for covering the walking audit of Foothill Boulevard (“A Walk Along Foothill,” News, March 23)! I really enjoyed reading this piece.

I am a La Crescenta resident and I was grateful to be able to attend the third walking audit back in October 2022. Similar to what many fellow residents pointed out, there is ample opportunity to reimagine and reinvigorate Foothill Boulevard to 1) be safer for people using all modes of transportation, and 2) become a true community gathering spot for residents. I frequently visit Montrose Shopping Park and can envision part of Foothill Boulevard – especially in La Crescenta, where there are already plenty of storefronts and ample parking spaces – to become more like Montrose Shopping Park.

Shops like Tickle Tree Café, Mochinut, and Sidebloom are wonderful stores that could benefit from safer access. I live on the side of Tickle Tree Café and frequently visit it. However, as much as I would like to visit Mochinut and Sidebloom, it is dangerous and not pleasant to cross La Crescenta Avenue by foot or bike as it currently is, nor is it convenient by motorized vehicle like a car.

Where Honolulu Avenue narrows to become Montrose Shopping Park is so pleasant. This is an area where cars travel more leisurely and where pedestrians can enjoy areas to walk, shop and eat among trees and shrubs. I hope we can ask for something like that right here for us all to enjoy together.
