Nestled among the oaks of Sunland Park is the Sunland Senior Citizen Center. It offers for a low-donation hot nutritious meals and a variety of activities.

According to Marline Motts, dining coordinator for three senior centers in the area, City of Los Angeles Dept. of Aging works to feed seniors.

“We are starting over after reopening after the pandemic in September 2022,” Motts said.

Nutritious hot lunches for seniors over 60 are served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. for a suggested donation of only $3.10. There is a suggested donation of $8.10 for all others. Coffee is served daily.

Activities include weekly bingo games on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cards are only $.25 each with a maximum of six cards.

Disabled persons are welcome to participate in the center’s programs with “reasonable accommodations” made with prior arrangements.

“The Sunland Tujunga Senior Center is as close as you get to a high school reunion,” said Joni Anderson, senior center member and participant. There are five seniors with my same birth year and the others are sprinkled close by like the stars. [There are] lots of opportunities to meet new friends over lunch and a variety of activities with great staff.”

The Sunland Senior Citizen Center also offers a variety of fitness programs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. They include pickleball, music and movement, a walking club, chair yoga and Aikido. There is a fee for most activities.

The Sunland Senior Citizen Center is looking for volunteers to teach a class, host an event and more. It is hoped that arts and crafts activities will be offered in the summer. The Sunland Senior Citizen Center is located at the rear of Sunland Park at 8640 Fenwick St., Sunland. For more information, call (818) 353-9571 or visit https://www.laparks.org/scc/sunland.
