“CRIMES” COMING TO CVHS

Crescenta Valley High School Drama Department will be presenting the play Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley. The play is directed by Lynn De Young, who last year directed 12 Angry Women. De Young is also an accomplished playwright who two years ago directed and wrote her original play Loser Group.

In Crimes of the Heart, three sisters with very different personalities and lives, reunite when the youngest sister shoots her husband.  Their reunion causes much joy but many tensions.

The play will be presented March 10, 11 and 12 and March 18 and 19 at 8:00 p.m. and March 17 at 5:00 p.m. in the Underground Theater located under the main office of the high school.

Still Time to Apply for Kiwanis Scholarships

Local Kiwanis President Lynn McGinnis wants seniors from Crescenta Valley and Clark Magnet high schools to know that there is still time to apply for one of the eight $500 scholarships from the Montrose La Crescenta Kiwanis Club.

Applications can be obtained from Cheryl Mulvoy at Crescenta Valley and from Valencia Watson at Clark. The completed applications are due at the high schools on March 21.

SAT Help Available

The Glendale Assistance League offers SAT Seminar classes to all students in private or public schools for $45 which includes the Kaplan SAT textbook. The League pays for the instructor’s time and even provides refreshments at every class.

These classes prepare the students for the SAT exam and give practice tests. There are eight classes with four in math and four in English.

One can still register for the upcoming spring semester. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday through March 30 or Tuesday and Thursday from March 8 through March 31.

The seminars will be held at Assistance League of Glendale

314 East Harvard St. in Glendale.

Y Holding Camp Sign Up and Carnival

The Crescenta Cañada and Verdugo Hills YMCAs are having Camp Sign Up Day & Carnival on Saturday, March 12 at both facilities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There’s fun for the whole family including carnival games, bounce houses, snacks and a free camp T-shirt with registration receipt. Facility members can register online at www.ymcafoothills.org.

Anyone who registers for camp at the Camp Sign Up Day & Carnival can enter a drawing to win a free week of camp. Facility members can register online before March 12 and bring their online receipt to Camp Sign up Day to become eligible for a free week of camp. Visit the website for more details.

CVHS Hosting Annual Concert

The annual CVHS Spring Concert is on Friday, March 11. The three groups that will be competing in several local festivals during the month of March – Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and Jazz Band – will perform some of their festival music. Music Director Mathew Schick selects this music to showcase each group’s strengths, as well as to entertain.

The concert takes place at 7:00 p.m. in MacDonald Auditorium, 4400 Ramsdell Ave., La Crescenta

Korean Barbecue Luncheon Planned

Tickets are now on sale from the CVHS Instrumental Music Department for its second annual Outdoor Family Korean BBQ luncheon. The event is a fundraiser for the Crescenta Valley Instrumental Music Foundation, which supports the work of the Department.

The inaugural luncheon last year marked the first time Korean parents had ever led (or so actively participated in) an instrumental music department fundraiser. Chairs Anna Choe and Janice Lee are recruiting dozens of volunteer parents (both Korean and non-Korean) who will help with everything from soliciting donations for raffle prizes and drinks to be served, to setting up or selling tickets at the event, to preparing or serving the food.

There will be a gourmet Korean BBQ meal including Kalbi beef, Korean noodles and rice, salad, a beverage, and dessert. The CVHS Jazz Band and auditioned student (rock) groups will perform.

Prizes to be raffled off throughout the event include tickets to performances at the Hollywood Bowl and Mark Taper Forum; free professional teeth whitening; a Tony Hawk Shred Wii game; and the grand prize of a Disneyland Park-Hopper package for two.

The Outdoor Family Korean BBQ luncheon takes place on Saturday, March 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the CVHS quad. Tickets are on sale through March 14 from any Instrumental Music student or through the Instrumental Music Department telephone (818) 249-5871. The $10 ticket includes the full gourmet meal, one free raffle ticket and free live musical entertainment.
