On Wednesday, July 19 at 12:10 p.m., the Free Admission Glendale Noon Concerts program will be performed live in the sanctuary of Glendale City Church.

The Free Admission Glendale Noon Concerts series has returned to live performance at the Sanctuary of Glendale City Church, 610 E. California Ave. in Glendale.

Ergo Musica musicians Adriana Zoppo and Justin Haynes-Pilon will perform classical works featuring the viola d’amore and cello.

The program is two pieces. The composers are anonymous. The duo for viola d’amore and violoncello in G major, No. 30, PNM A199 “Andante,” “Adagio” and “Tempo di Minuetto.”

“Tempo moderato,” “Menuetto” and “Trio Allegro.”

Adriana Zoppo performs on violin, viola, baroque violin, baroque viola and the unusual and rarely heard viola d’amore and appears frequently on the Glendale Noon Concerts series where she is director of its early music sub-series. In addition to performing in the string sections of symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, early music groups and numerous other ensembles in the Southern California area, she also plays for motion pictures, television shows, solo artist recordings, Broadway musicals and live shows encompassing styles from classical to jazz. Justin Haynes-Pilon has performed throughout North America on both baroque cello and viola da gamba. In California, he has performed with the LA Baroque Players, Musica Angelica, the American Contemporary Ballet, Opera Animata, and Opera Neo. Haynes-Pilon also has performed with many leading Canadian early music ensembles including Tafelmusik, Opera Atelier and Les Voix Humaines, and appeared regularly as both soloist and continuo player with the Toronto Masque Theatre and the Toronto Consort. Haynes-Pilon first studied baroque cello and historical performance practice with Emily Walhout, Reinmar Seidler, Phoebe Carrai, Robert Mealy and Robert Levin while an undergraduate at Harvard. After graduating, he went on to study viola da gamba with Philippe Pierlot at the Royal Dutch Conservatory in the Hague. Haynes-Pilon is currently an assistant professor of Classics at Georgetown University.  

These duos are from a collection of music for viola d’amore probably from the Classic Period (late 18th/early 19th century), housed at the Prague National Museum/ Czech Museum of Music and recently made available in modern transcription by Thomas Georgi. There are no names of composers on the manuscripts and most likely they are the work of more than one person, but the musical style is consistent with that in vogue at the time in Vienna and other cities of the Austrian Empire.

Glendale Noon Concerts is celebrating its 15^th year of presenting free admission concerts every first and third Wednesday for Glendale and the Southland community.
