Barbara Chahin Rosenthal

Dec. 4, 1944 – Sept. 24, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Chahin Rosenthal, age 78, on Sept. 24 after a brief but courageous battle with mesothelioma. A beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to many, Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and cherished memories that will never be forgotten by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Born on Dec. 4, 1944 in El Salvador, Barbara was the baby sister of five children born to Jose and Sara Chahin. Barbara later came to California at the age of 14 to attend Immaculate Heart High School. Upon graduation, Barbara worked at Parsons for several years and soon met the love of her life, Peter Rosenthal, who hails from New York City. Together, they lived in several states before settling permanently in La Cañada Flintridge in 1973.

Barbara was a woman of many interests and talents. She was a gifted artist and had a lifelong passion for tennis, theater, opera and travel and also had a “need for speed” – surprising for such a modest and gentle soul. For instance, she once drove a Nascar racecar on a local track as well as supporting a still flying B24 bomber with Peter. Although not a pilot, she was once given the controls of a T6 Trainer and P51 Mustang where she “rolled” the T6 and “rolled” and “looped” the P51. She loved every second of these experiences.

Additionally, Barbara was a true animal lover caring for her dogs, horses, birds and fish among other animals. She was also admired for her professionalism as the CFO of V.I.P. Trust Deed Company where she worked alongside her husband up until her passing. Her unwavering dedication and hard work were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Family was the center of Barbara’s life. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother, always there for the family, with a keen interest in their development over the years. She and Peter also recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary and were still madly in love right up to the very end.

In addition to her devotion to her family, Barbara was a cherished friend to many. Her inspiring generosity, kindness, compassion and sincere interest in others endeared her to all who had the honor of crossing her path. She had a way of making everyone feel truly valued and loved. Those who were blessed to know her know they had been touched by an angel.

Barbara is survived by her loving family including her husband Peter; children Diana (Peter) Hutton and Robert (Jodi) Rosenthal; and her three grandchildren Callum, Ben and Emma. Barbara is also survived by her sister Angela, nieces and nephews.

As we mourn the loss of Barbara, we also celebrate her remarkable life and the love and joy she brought into our lives. Her legacy of love, kindness and generosity will continue to inspire us all. Though she may no longer be with us in person, her spirit will forever live on in our hearts.

A celebration of life will be announced later in the year. In lieu of flowers, please support “Lifesavers,” a wild horse rescue organization, at www.wildhorserescue.org.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have supported us during this difficult time. Your thoughts, prayers and acts of kindness have been a source of strength and comfort.

Barbara would have wanted us to all enjoy every moment and cherish family and friends. We hope you do so in her honor.

Rest in peace, dear Barbara. You will be forever missed but never forgotten.
