GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Oct. 6, John Over will be speaking “Amusing our Kids to Death: Confessions of a Children’s TV Producer.”

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $20. All are welcome.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

 

‘SUBSEQUENT RETROSPECTIVE’ COMING TO STEPHANIE’S GALLERY

The exhibit “Subsequent Retrospective” is at Stephanie’s Gallery, 466 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada.

“Subsequent Retrospective” is a journey into the fusion of art and architecture expressed through the vivid abstract lens of Koko Hovaguimian. The community is invited to witness the seamless harmony of colors, forms and emotions in his captivating creations.

Hovaguimian’s pieces have garnered praise from art critics and captivated audiences worldwide, making her one of the most exciting contemporary artists to watch.

The exhibit continues through Oct. 31.

 

CSCSGV PRESENTS ANNUAL LADIES NIGHT OUT

On Friday, Oct. 6 Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley (CSCSGV) presents its 13th Annual Ladies Night Out, a festive evening to celebrate and honor the courageous women in the community who have been touched by cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year’s theme, “Barbie Bash!” will transform the upstairs rotunda of Paseo Colorado into a Barbie Party, followed by a glamorous evening in Noor’s Ella Ballroom. Ladies Night Out begins at 6 p.m. with Muffy Marracco, writer and game show personality, serving as emcee. The evening will include a special presentation from Beckie Bonifassi, the woman who fought to have a bald Barbie made available for all while her teenage daughter was suffering with leukemia. Bonifassi was also helped fight to get the Childhood Cancer STAR (Survivorship, Treatment, Access, Research) Act passed by Congress in 2018.

SUNLAND-TUJUNGA INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY FESTIVAL

ST Forward presents the 3rd Annual Sunland-Tujunga Indigenous Peoples Day festival on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Mountains, Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) located at 12400 Big Tujunga Canyon Road in Tujunga from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will meet at “Tuxuunga,” the “Place of the Old Woman,” under the mother oak on the unceded land of the Tongva to honor, celebrate, uplift and learn from the indigenous peoples reaffirming their culture, contributions, relationship to the land and visionary leadership.

This free educational and participatory event includes music, dance, storytelling and spoken word that celebrate historic and contemporary cultures and wisdom of local Tongva, Tataviam and Chumash and other native populations of California and the Americas. There will be a native plant walk and carving, weaving and beading workshops, book, craft and jewelry vendors, and food including fry bread and Oaxacan cuisine.

Food will also be provided by Big Lou’s BBQ and by Rincon Oaxaquenos. Please note that this is a “cash only” event and that no photography is permitted except by the advance permission of the photographed.

ADAMS HILL ARTS FESTIVAL APPLICATIONS GO LIVE

The second annual Adams Hill Neighborhood Association Arts Festival will be held Oct. 8 on Park Street in Glendale and will feature local artists, vendors and musicians. In anticipation of the event, the application for musicians and artists has been released.

TGHS GALA & BENEFIT

The Glendale Historical Society’s Gala & Benefit will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This year’s celebratory and fundraising event will be held at Barker House, a 1958 Mid-century Modern home with breathtaking city views. Designed by architect and builder Edward A. Kirtlan, Barker House is listed on the Glendale Register of Historic Resources.

The evening under the stars will include classic cocktails, delicious hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction fundraiser (live and online). Proceeds benefit TGHS’s preservation efforts.

Tickets for the Gala & Benefit are $150 for TGHS members and $175 for nonmembers.

RSVPs are due. Event address will be provided to confirmed attendees a few days prior to the benefit.

NICE BEES, MEAN BEES, CELEBRITY BEES, TOO!

Award winning beekeeper Dave Williams of Pasadena is bringing his astonishing stories, insight and his live bees (don’t worry) for the La Crescenta Woman’s Club’s October program on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The second monthly offering in our Fall Arts & Education Program Series is open to all Club members and interested community members who would like to be our guests. It starts at 11 a.m.; the clubhouse address is 4004 La Crescenta Ave., La Crescenta.

Keep Dave Williams talking and you will hear tales of strange beehive encounters. He does safe bee removal from all over the county and beyond, including from multi-million dollar mansions. He even has stories of Malibu celebrity bee encounters! (Ask him about the lady who wanted to preserve her beehive in her kitchen wall, at great expense, so she could watch them work.)

Williams loves his bees and after hearing him speak, listeners might be open to loving them too!

 

RIVERWALK WORKDAY

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, Oct. 13 to work next to the Los Angeles River on the City of Glendale’s Riverwalk. Volunteers will remove invasive plants from the landscaped areas along the LA River. Please wear sturdy shoes, protective clothing, and bring water. Tools and gloves will be provided. Families, individuals, clubs, and students needing community service hours are welcome.

In case of rain, this event will be cancelled. Riverwalk Workday is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Meet at 300 Paula Ave. in Glendale.

THE LONE WOMAN OF SAN NICOLAS

In 1835, when her people were removed from Haraasnga (San Nicolas Island), a lone indigenous woman was left behind. She lived alone on the island for 18 years. At the Oct. 14 program at the Bolton Hall Museum, attendees will learn about the circumstances of her abandonment, her subsequent rescue and more recent discoveries made on San Nicolas.

The presenter for this program is local historian Craig Durst who will share his research on San Nicolas’ indigenous people and their relationships to local Tongva, founders of the village of Tehunga. An abbreviated screening of the film “Island of the Blue Dolphins,” based in the story of the Lone Woman, will follow the presentation.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome. 

The presentation is on Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum, home of Little Landers Historical Society, 10110 Commerce Ave.

INTERPRETIVE HIKE AT DEUKMEJIAN

The public is invited to an interpretive hike in Deukmejian Wilderness Park and a nature craft, nature-themed games and a tour of the Stone Barn Nature Center. Provided are water, snacks and bus transportation from Pacific Community Center, leaving at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 12:30 p.m. 

(Program time begins at 9 a.m. at Deukmejian Wilderness Park.) Those who choose to meet at the park should arrive by 8:45 a.m. The program ends at noon and bus riders will return to Pacific Community Center by 12:30 p.m.

Important information:

  • A free bus leaves from Pacific Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave. at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 12:30 p.m.
  • Those riding the bus should arrive by 8 a.m. to check-in with the staff. 
  • Please wear sturdy shoes, long pants, and a hat or cap.
  • Adult supervision is required! One adult for every three children (17 and under) is required.

VHHS PLANS REUNION

“Team 74” is planning a 50th high school reunion in 2024. Friends and graduates of Verdugo Hills High School are invited to attend to trade stories of family, careers, adventures and anything else.

Currently Team 74 is in the planning phase of collecting names and numbers of classmates and putting together a database; emails from classmates can be received at clsof74reunion@yahoo.com. Information should include a mailing address, cell number and graduate’s name at graduation (if different than now).

A list of frequently asked questions will be provided to keep everyone updated as the reunion plans move forward. Those who belong to various VHHS groups will see redundant information to ensure all classmates are notified and have an opportunity to attend.

At this time the FB VHHS groups will be the reunion information outlet until a more focused site is created.
