CV track athletes looked sharp as they held their first league meet on their own track against the Muir Mustangs on Thursday, March 17.

The final score were solid wins for CV with boys at 81-51 and  the girls at 119-15.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment was that Muir arrived with a small number of students to participate in the meet. Lacking middle and long distance runners Muir concentrated on sprints, hurdles and field events.

The start of the contest provided the tone for the day. CV’s boys (43.7) and girls (52.20) ran an uncontested 400m relay race. Junior Mike Duncan raced a strong 1600m (4:36) followed by teammates senior Bob Anderson placing second (4:37.6) and senior Ben Miller taking third (5:08).

Rising star junior Josh Straschewski had a dual win both in the 110 high hurdles (15.4) and the 300m low hurdles (43.7) followed by junior Nick Ruiz placing second (15.6) and taking second in the 300 LH (46.3) as well. Junior Cody Heydenreich took third in the 110m high hurdles (16.6). Muir’s sprint star Daitevyon Mc Fadden took first in the 400m with an impressive time (51.7) and teammate Callum snagged second (53.3) followed by CV junior Dylan Devens taking third (54.6).

CV was able to triple in the high jump with senior Andrew Roide winning first place (6-0) followed by teammates Ruiz taking second (5:10) and Tom Hwang (5’8”) placing third. CV sprinters junior James Maturan ran one of his best races (11.28) in the 100m dash to edge out teammate Parker Averill at the finish and placing second in the 200m (22.9) behind Holmes of Muir (22.6).

Averill took second in the 100m (11.31) and third in the 200m (23.2). Junior Levi Walker 19’11”) beat out Polk of Muir (19’6”) in the long jump and placed third in the triple jump (38’2”). CV’s senior Brian Yaung won the triple jump (40’6. 5”).

The CV boys grabbed a triple win in the 3200m with seniors David Owens winning (10:58) and Miller taking second (11:09.7) and Jacob Smith (11:55) taking third. CV also took a triple win in the pole vault: senior Brennen Hicklin (10’6”), junior Tyler Bradshaw placed second (9’) followed by Chris Daza (8’6”).

Coach Mark Evans was particularly pleased with the sprint victories. “I thought our sprinters ran very well against Muir,” he said. “They have some good sprinters who really pushed us to run well. Parker and James went 1-2 in the 100 against a couple pretty good guys. Parker had a great 200 against one of the better sprinters in the league.”

For the first time, CV girls had triple winnings in nine events and double winnings in two additional events. Sophomore Cali King had a dual win in the 1600m (5:38) and the 3200m in the 1600m (12.37.1). Claudia Pham won second in the 1600m (5:48.6) and Ali Johnson third (6:03).

Junior Claudia Sepulveda shared a dual victory in the 100 high hurdles and the 300m low hurdles (49.62) followed by Anneke Kakebeen winning second place both in the 100m LH (17.6) and (49.93) in the 300 LH. Eileen Martin took a dual third in the 100m LH and (53.7) in the 300m LH.

Ali Johnson, Claudia Pham and Diane Lombardi shared the pace and winning time of the 800m (2.46.6) with Johnson being credited with the win. Sophomore Noel Wong took a solid win in the 100m (12.7), followed by teammates Kayleigh Carrillo in second (13.0) and Maple Jones taking third (13.4).

Senior Tiernan Hebron, who had been suffering with a pulled muscle, won both the 200m in 27.13 and 400m (62.1). Freshman Kayleigh Carrillo placed second in the 200m (27.20) and sophomore Noel Wong taking third (27.7). The high jump was won by freshman Shannon Green (4’6”) followed by junior Kathryn Laudeman taking second (4’2”).

Laura White took first in the triple jump (30’9”) followed by Maple Jones in second (30’5) and Leah Howitt placing third (30’). Paige Patino took second in the shot put (25’6”) and teammate Elia Ganon placed (23.1). Juniors Selina Magid won the pole vault (7”6”) with Kathryn Laudeman taking second (7’).
