GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Friday, April 19, GPD officer Amy Tate will make a presentation with comfort dog Brisket.

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $20. All are welcome.

RENAISSANCE PLEASURE FAIRE

The original Renaissance Faire returns to Irwindale at the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area Saturdays and Sundays now through May 19 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at 15501 E. Arrow Highway in Irwindale. Service animals welcome but no pets allowed. Costume weapons must be sheathed and peace-tied.

DANCING AS EXERCISE

Dancing As Exercise is a free ongoing weekly event sponsored by the Los Angeles County Park program for seniors (50 plus) as a form of staying healthy.

There is live music every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Park’s building at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Light refreshments and water are provided along with socialization and information about other park activities.

Dancing, per se, is not required; single persons are welcome.

CANASTA IS CALLING

CCLCF HOSTS UPCOMING FREE EVENTS

On Friday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CCLCF is having bingo & brunch for seniors.

On Thursday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Covenant Cat Rescue will be hosting a Seniors for Seniors cat adoption day. Low-rate adoption fees.

On Saturday, May 4 from 1-6 p.m. CCLCF is hosting its first ever cornhole tournament and chili cook-off. Seeking sponsors for the event. Sponsors receive custom cornhole board sets and a score tower with their logo. To participate, entry costs are $60 for two people for the cornhole tournament, which includes chili cook-off tasting tickets and prizes for the winning team. The cost to enter the chili cook-off is $20 per entry with prizes for first, second and third place. Wanted: Chili cook-off entries!

LUKE’S HOSTING ANNIVERSARY GALA

PSA JURIED EXHIBITION AT WHITES GALLERY

The Pasadena Society of Artists’ 99^th Annual Juried Exhibition takes place at Whites Fine Art Gallery, 2414 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose through Saturday, April 27.

The 99^th Annual Juried Exhibition is also available online at ISSUU.com. A full color catalog will be available for purchase at the opening reception.

Kenneth Ronney selected 42 artists and 73 artworks for the 99^th Annual Juried Exhibition. Media include collage, oil, acrylic, pen and ink, mixed media, digital images, assemblage, watercolor, etching, photography and ceramics.

CALTECH JAZZ BAND PRESENTS ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Caltech Jazz Band presents the annual jazz festival featuring three groups: The Caltech Jazz Band, the Kirsten Edkins Group and the Eva Scow Collective. This outdoor concert has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Hameetman Patio. The festival is outside with limited seating. Please bring a folding chair, blankets and picnic items. Parking is free.

The Caltech Jazz Band, directed by Barb Catlin, will open the festival with an array of big band music, including two new works from Caltech alum Dr. Les Deutsch and Caltech grad student Phil Kocheril.

BURBANK AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY

The Burbank African Violet Society will have its next club meeting on Thursday morning, April 18 at 10 a.m. at The Little White Chapel Christian Church, 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank. The program will be “African Violet Survey Results – Our Members’ Interests, Skills and Collections” led by John Hershey.

The 38^th anniversary of the Society will also be celebrated at the meeting. Individual yearly membership dues are $15, couple’s yearly membership dues are $20.

Guide Dogs of America/Tender Loving Canines (GDA/TLC) presents the 2024 open house titled “Happy Tails. Happy Trails.” It is taking place at the GDA/TLC campus in Sylmar on June 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The 2024 open house will provide lots of fun activities for the whole family and will feature a puppy-kissing booth, tours of the GDA/TLC seven-acre campus and a silent auction with gift baskets. GIFF ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS

The Glendale International Film Festival is now accepting film and screenplay submissions for its 10^th anniversary edition. GIFF 2024 is produced and presented by non-profit Glendale Arts and will be held from Sept. 26-Oct. 1.

Filmmakers and screenwriters from all over the world are invited to submit their projects via FilmFreeway at https://filmfreeway.com/GlendaleInternationalFilmFestival. Films, student films, and screenplays will be accepted until the final submissions deadline on July 12. Selected films will be screened during the festival at the Glendale location of the Laemmle Theatres. 

This year, GIFF has expanded to 22 submission categories.

ACTIVITIES AT SUNLAND SENIOR CENTER

The Sunland Senior Center offers a selection of classes and activities daily. Whether seniors are looking to exercise or dance or are interested in art, theater, or knitting, the Center has something for everyone. Sunland also hosts bingo on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and a movie matinee on the big screen at 1 p.m. on Thursdays; on Mondays and Fridays there is country line dancing from noon-1:30 p.m. The Sunland Senior Center runs programming from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a donations-based lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
