The damp weather did not deter the Lincoln Elementary students from participating in the 42nd Annual Lincoln 500, which was held on the Lincoln playground on May 24. This amazing tradition brings the school together to cheer on the Big Wheel racers.
The Lincoln Dads Club, led by Danny Brown, once again organized the event. The dads practiced with the students who were chosen by their homeroom teachers for the relay race. Three separate practices were held to prepare the students for the big race.
The race consists of seven teams that include first-third graders who rode the Big Wheels and fourth-sixth graders who were pit crewmembers. A few dads assigned to each team made sure the transitions ran smoothly.
Each rider completed two laps and then made their way back to the pit crew to exchange riders. The first team to complete 12 laps was named the winner. The entire school – parents, teachers and students – all cheered their favorite teams.
The winning team this year was the Orange Team. Following tradition Glendale Police Dept. officers came in at the end of the race to give the winning team speeding tickets.
This memorable event is one of man that brings together the entire Lincoln community.
