Alice E. Shively

1927 – 2024

Our Alice – “Cookie,” Mom, Grandma, GG – passed away on June 2 at the age of 96.

She was born in San Mateo, California in 1927. She married the love of her life Robert Shively in 1953. Robert’s first career was captain in the U.S. Army. Together they raised their three boys wherever the Army sent them, including Japan, Germany and the east coast of the U.S. before ultimately settling in beautiful La Crescenta.

She, along with her husband, owned and operated Carney’s Nursery in La Crescenta for almost 25 years before trying their hands at vegetable farming in Grass Valley, California before Robert’s death in 1989. She has never dated another man since and remained a widow for over 34 years, living to the end in their La Crescenta home.

She found her life’s joy in her family, caring for her home, gardening and shopping – she particularly loved “her Montrose!” This was a woman who had a zest for life even while struggling at the very end. She enjoyed a good cheeseburger, a milkshake and was passionate about donuts!

Alice had a very strong work ethic, starting her mornings with “Time to get crackin’!” A day wasn’t worthwhile unless there was a job, a project or a shopping expedition well done!

She leaves us feeling sad at her passing but with the greatest of memories of her warm, sweet and generous spirit. Alice, we will miss you and forever keep you in our hearts. You were one-of-a-kind, a “class act” to be sure. Enjoy your cheeseburger in paradise.

Surviving family includes two sons: Bill (Linda) Shively, Mike (Laurie) Shively, [son Robert passed at age 57]; six grandchildren: Stephanie, Brandon, Julia, Alicia, Sarah and Keith; three great grandchildren: Koen, Brighton and Rowan; and nephew Howard (Jean), niece Bambi (Kevin) as well as other extended family.

Alice will be laid to rest with her beloved Robert at Forest Lawn, Glendale. Service was held in the Wee Kirk o’ the Heather Chapel on Wednesday, June 12.
