Yummy for Your Tummy – Reinvigorating Our Recipe Section
Years ago, when I first started the CV Weekly, our recipe section was part of our Between Friends and/or Just For Fun sections of the newspaper. It was great getting and sharing recipes from readers, professional chefs and others. Over the years, though, I didn’t give the section the loving attention that it needed.
Then I learned that the founders of the Don Francisco’s coffee brand are Crescenta Valley residents and were eager to share with our readers some of their delicious recipes! Being an avid coffee drinker, you can imagine how excited I am to know that the Don Francisco’s family is Crescenta Valley neighbors – they know how much we love our coffee! You can learn all about the Gaviña family on page 17 then try their recipe for Iced Coconut Cold Brew Coffee. You will also have a chance to win a Don Francisco’s coffee basket. Send Rachelle (rachelle@cvweekly.com) a picture of you reading the CV Weekly with a cup of java and you’ll be entered to win a fantastic coffee basket! All submissions must be received by Aug. 26 at 4 p.m.
I also invite you to revisit our recipe section (found online in the drop down menu of Between Friends) to read some of the delicious recipes found there! You won’t be sorry.

I attended National Night Out festivities on Tuesday night at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station. What a busy night! Attendees included several CV Weekly readers and supporters. Also at the event were representatives from the station, Montrose Search & Rescue, U.S. Forest Service (complete with an oversized stuffed Smokey Bear) and JPL Hazmat. Information booths from the Veterans of Foreign Wars/American Legion, Ralphs, Glendale Unified School District, JPL, CV Weekly, Prom Plus and the CV Chamber of Commerce were among those on hand. Classic cars jazzed up the place, too! Thanks to Dwight Sityar for arranging that!
In addition to free barbecued hot dogs, baked goods were on sale. Various beverages were available, too, to quench our thirst. However, the highlight of the night was the water balloon toss. The toss paired uniformed personnel with kids and there were quite a few competitors (though by the end of the competition few contestants were entirely dry!).
The water balloon toss capped off an evening of NNO fun at the station and I know that throughout the area similar fun events were held.
