The Big Strike Auction Pans for Gold

Scouting America – Verdugo Hills Council struck gold at its 49th Annual Big Strike fundraiser with net profits between $35,000 and $45,000. On Sept. 29 close to100 supporters showed up at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club to enjoy dinner, a short program and silent and live auctions.   

Cathy Zappala was honored with the North Star Award, which recognizes service by an individual not registered in Scouting. Retired after 50 years in the escrow industry, Zappala volunteers for several community organizations including the Council, Kiwanis, Soroptimists and the Salvation Army.  

Troop 209 twins Kathryn and Isaac Ericson support the 49th Annual Big Strike Auction.

“The more you give, the more it comes back to you,” Zappala said.  

Eleven-year-old twins Kathryn and Isaac Ericson of Troop 209 were brought to the podium by Verdugo Hills Council President Hovik Shahinian. Kathryn announced that she wants to earn the Eagle Scout Award. Future Eagle Scout Kathryn and her brother Isaac attend John Muir School in Burbank.

Burbank Kiwanis President Diane Cripe presented a $10,000 facsimile check to Shahinian and Scout Executive Laura Clay. The funds will go toward the Council’s capital campaign.   

The mission of the Verdugo Hills Council is to serve community youth and families.
