GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale meets on Fridays at noon. On Nov. 8, Captn. Quinton Markham of the Salvation Army will be making a presentation.

The cost to attend Friday meetings, which includes lunch and program, is $20. All are welcome.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. in Glendale.

DANCING AS EXERCISE

Dancing As Exercise is a free ongoing weekly event sponsored by the Los Angeles County Park program for seniors (50 plus) as a form of staying healthy.

There is live music every Friday (note new day) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Park’s community building at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Light refreshments and water are provided along with socialization and information about other park activities.

Dancing, per se, is not required; single persons are welcome.

CANASTA IS CALLING

Canasta – an activity that will brighten your day with fun and relaxation. Those who have not played before – don’t worry; you will be taught! Come on Tuesday afternoons to play canasta from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Montrose Library, 2465 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose (818) 548-2048.

CCLCF BOASTS SEVERAL EVENTS

Standard pricing for participants of the Thanksgiving Day Run continues: $50 for adults, $25 for children. Volunteers are needed for an assortment of duties for the Thanksgiving Day Run. Prices increase on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.

Drop bins from NASA Services for the CCLCF food drive are available at local schools and select businesses in the area. The food drive ends Nov. 21.

Looking ahead, CCLCF is having its annual ceramics holiday sale on Dec. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE

Chapter FF-KU of the women’s philanthropic organization P.E.O. will hold its annual holiday boutique on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta. Crafts, foods and other delights will be for sale to support women’s education.

RIVERWALK WORKDAY

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to work next to the Los Angeles River on the City of Glendale’s Riverwalk. Volunteers will remove invasive plants from the landscaped areas along the River. Wear sturdy shoes, protective clothing, and bring water; tools and gloves provided. Families, individuals, clubs and students needing community service hours are welcome.

‘HELLO NORMA JEANE – THE MARILYN MONROE YOU DIDN’T KNOW’

All are invited to Bolton Hall Museum at 1 p.m. on Nov. 9 for little known facts about Marilyn Monroe. Before her success on the big screen, Marilyn was Norma Jeanne Baker and used to hang out at local lakes and pools. Many myths surround this Hollywood icon and the speaker for this program, Elisa Jordan, will share the facts about Marilyn’s life.

Hollywood researcher and writer Jordan has been a Marilyn Monroe fan since the age of 5 and has written extensively and appeared in documentaries about her. Her book about Marilyn will be available for purchase after the program.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

RHAPSODY FOUND AT CALTECH

The Caltech Wind Orchestra presents its fall concert, titled Rhapsody, on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 in Ramo Auditorium.

The concerts feature the same program of music by Gershwin, Badings and Ito. The featured work is Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” celebrating its 100^th anniversary, with special guest piano soloist Bernadene Blaha. Saturday’s concert will be joined by CSU Long Beach Wind Symphony (Jermie Arnold, conductor) and Sunday’s concert will be joined by Symphonic Winds of The Pacific (Stephen Rochford, conductor).

GLENDALE OUTDOORS! (GO!) COMMUNITY PROGRAM
On Saturday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon the community is invited to enjoy the great outdoors. There will be an interpretive hike in Deukmejian Wilderness Park, a nature craft, nature-themed games and a tour of the Stone Barn Nature Center. Water, snacks and bus transportation from Pacific Community Center, leaving at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 12:30 p.m., will be provided. Funding for the bus is provided by Metro, a partner in our community. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants and a hat.

Program time begins at 9 at Deukmejian Wilderness Park. Those who choose to meet at the park should arrive by 8:45 a.m. The program ends at noon and bus riders will return to Pacific Community Center by 12:30 p.m.

BRUNCH AND CONCERT FUNDRAISER

Soroptimist International of Glendale and the Glendale Community College Music Department are presenting a scholarship brunch and concert at GCC featuring Symphony of the Verdugos, Jewel City Jazz Combo and more on Sunday, Nov. 10. The brunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the concert at 1:15 p.m. Funds go to the SIG scholarship for performing arts students at GCC.

END OF YEAR MIXER AT PORTO’S

The community is invited to join GLA for a mixer at Porto’s Bakery & Café, 315 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale on Nov. 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. when GLA partners with the “Cops For Kids” holiday toy drive and announces GLA’s 2025 honorees. 

The Porto’s year-end mixer features a delicious dinner including dessert. Ticket buyers will contribute to raising vital funds for scholarships.

FOOD DRIVE BENEFITS BAILEY CENTER

The Crescenta Valley Lions Club is having a food drive benefiting the Bailey Center on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Luke’s of the Mountains, 2563 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta. CELEBRITY BOWLING PARTY

The annual Bowl For Ronnie celebrity bowling party, benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org), is set for Thursday, Nov. 14. The event, to be held at PINZ Bowling Center in Studio City, will again be hosted by television and radio personality Eddie Trunk, who is heard on SiriusXM’s 103 Faction Talk channel. Bowl For Ronnie will feature a celebrity bowling tournament and a raffle drawing for prizes and memorabilia. Last year’s bowling event sold out in advance and raised more than $80,000 for the cancer charity, now in its 15th year of raising awareness and much-needed funding for cancer research. 

The evening of fun, food and, of course, bowling with rockers and celebrities competing for trophies kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with open bowling and a VIP pre-party for lane sponsors, celebrities and their guests. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the Bowl For Ronnie will go to the Dio Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org).

Lane sponsorships are now on sale and participants are encouraged to gather friends, family and co-workers for the ultimate bowling team.

DEUKMEJIAN WILDERNESS WORKDAY

HOOP SHOOT FREE THROW CONTEST

The Glendale Elks Lodge #1289 will be holding its annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 8 – 11:30 a.m. at the gym at Rosemont Middle School, 4725 Rosemont Ave. in La Crescenta.   

Youth ages of 8 – 13 are eligible to participate. There is no cost to participate and winners have the opportunity to advance to the district, state, regional and the national finals in Chicago in April 2025. Six national champions will have their names and photos displayed at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.   

There are six categories – ages: 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 for boys and girls.

KIWANIS CLUB OF THE VERDUGOS HOSTS BINGO NIGHT

On Saturday, Nov. 16 the Kiwanis Club of the Verdugos is hosting a bingo night at Verdugo Hills Memorial Hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave. in La Crescenta. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; games start at 6 p.m.

Admission is $25 for 10 game cards. Bingo is limited to 150 players; advanced ticket purchase is recommended. Sponsorships are available. Food and beverages available for purchase.

GYO PRESENTS OPENING CONCERT

On Nov. 17 the Glendale Youth Orchestra presents the 36th season opening concert celebrating composers and music that have spanned a century of time. The concert will feature Fauré, “Sicilienne from

Pelleas et Mellisande” (100 years since Fauré’s death); Puccini, “Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut” (100 years since Puccini’s death); Gershwin, “Rhapsody in Blue” (piece is 100 years old) and Mancini, “A Tribute to Henry Mancini” (100 years birthday for Mancini). Additional music to be performed includes Tchaikovsky, “Dances from Nutcracker Suite” and Guaraldi, “Charlie Brown Christmas.” Music director and conductor Henry Shin will also be joining the orchestra performing as the piano soloist for “Rhapsody in Blue.”

The GYO is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Dept. of Arts and Culture.

BURBANK AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY

The Burbank African Violet Society have its next club meeting on Thursday morning, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. at The Little White Chapel Christian Church at 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank.

Club member Beverlee Nelson will present the learning lab of “Planting an African Violet Leaf.” The program will be playing “Leaf Bingo.” Members are to bring named African violet leaves – two to a plastic bag with the ends wrapped in a cotton ball and aluminum foil. Members and guests will enjoy playing lively games of bingo with winning the African violet leaves. 

There will be a raffle and silent auction tables. Show-and-tell, questions and answers will be part of the program. Refreshments are served and friendships are made. INTERPRETIVE HIKE, “GOBBLE, GOBBLE, TURKEY HIKE,” AT DEUKMEJIAN

The City of Glendale is hosting a calorie-burning hike on Nov. 30 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. with some interpretation about plants and birds along the way. The hiking trail is moderately difficult with stops along the way for discussion, stories and activities.

THE TOWNE SINGERS’ HOLIDAY 2024 CONCERT

The Towne Singers is having a holiday concert on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena. This 75-voice choir, under the direction of Lance Merrill and accompanied by Richard An, will brighten the start of the season with festive selections such as “Gettin’ In The Mood (for Christmas),” “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Cjannukah in Santa Monica,” “I Saw Three Ships,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “O Holy Night,” “O Magnum Mysterium,” “The Yodel Carol” and “White Christmas.” 

The performance includes narrative and choreography and a special visit from Santa Claus, who will be available for photos with kids during intermission. During intermission entertainment continues with a rousing game of “Name that Holiday Movie.”

ACTIVITIES AT SUNLAND SENIOR CENTER

The Sunland Senior Center offers a selection of classes and activities daily. Whether seniors are looking to exercise or dance or are interested in art, theater, or knitting, the Center has something for everyone. Sunland also hosts bingo on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and a movie matinee on the big screen at 1 p.m. on Thursdays; on Mondays and Fridays there is country line dancing from noon-1:30 p.m. The Sunland Senior Center runs programming from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a donations-based lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
