The Lanterman House will sponsor a talk on the history and benefits of native plants by Richard Toyon on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lanterman House Visitor Center. The talk will be followed by a brief tour of the Lanterman House Native Plant Garden and refreshments made from native plants.
Speaker Richard Toyon, a 14th generation Native Californian, will talk about the history and traditional Tongva uses of plants native to this area. The lecture will be followed by a tour of the native plant garden by Girl Scout Cozette Rinde, who spent the past year maintaining and adding to the garden as part of her Gold Award project.
As part of her project, Rinde also created an educational webpage and print flyer, which will be available to visitors.
“I hope visitors to the garden gain the insights I’ve learned while cultivating it. Native plants are not only beautiful but also crucial to our ecosystem and well-being. This project has deepened my appreciation for their importance and why we must continue to incorporate them into our lives,” said Rinde.
Seating for the talk on Nov. 17 is offered on a first-come basis with a maximum occupancy of 50. No reservations are necessary. The event is free.
If visitors wish to take a tour of the historic Lanterman House prior to the event, they can make a reservation for the 1 p.m. tour. For more information, visit lantermanhouse.org.
