Perhaps a Better Way
to Honor
I sympathize with and respect military families, especially those who have paid the ultimate price [“The American Flag: We Retire Her from Duty,” April 28].
We must certainly remember and honor the victims of our wars, but to me such honor needs to go beyond the traditional memorial monument.  I believe we would transmit a better message now and into the future by including our desire that no more die in war as did those listed, and countless more.
As I’ve said in person to Mr. Spayth, who also has my respect, a memorial which commemorates local war dead while in some way expressing hopes for peace would be something that I believe a broader swatch of our community would support. I would help raise funds for such an effort.      Others?

Sympathizes with Jim Chase
Thank you so much for sharing, Jim [“Goodbye to a Golden Girl,” Viewpoints, April 28). I feel your pain. I felt that pain so many times before. It never gets easier. Just a hard pain that lingers what seems to be forever.
We had a  Golden retriever, his name was Shoup. We should have named him “Love.”
This is how I remember him – Love – and his many many clumps of hair.
