QUEST FOR A CAUSE: A FUNDRAISING
ADVENTURE
The Salvation Army’s Safe Place Program
presents a driving scavenger hunt through
Glendale on Saturday, June 4 to benefit services
to teens. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the
Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St. The
adventure begins at 10 a.m. Teams should have
two to four people with at least one licensed
driver. Clues are provided at registration. Earn
opportunity tickets for every clue solved. The
Quest is not a race, so participants don’t need to
solve every clue to win.
Lunch is provided after the Quest. The entry
fee for adults is $35 and $20 for teens ages
12-18. Tickets are available online at www.

PARATROOPERS: HISTORY OF THE AIRBORNE
DIVISIONS OF WWII SUBJECT OF MEETING
On Saturday, June 11, at 1 p.m. the Little
Landers Historical Society will host a presentation
entitled Paratroopers: History of the Airborne
Divisions of WWII.
The speaker is Taylor Menadue, a high school
sophomore. Despite his young age, Menadue is
an accomplished WWII historian and an honorary
member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge,
Southern California Chapter. He is also a member
of the re-enacting group from the 82nd Airborne
WWII Living History Association whose motto is
“Remembering History and Those Who Served.”
In addition to his presentation, Menadue will also
display items from his collection.
Immediately following the presentation
Bolton Hall will have the honor of hosting the
POW/MIA table ceremony. This solemn dignified
ceremony is a tribute to the POW/MIA still missing
from all wars. The ceremony will be conducted
by the Polytechnic High School JROTC.

DESCANSO GARDENS PRESENTS SUMMER IN
THE GARDENS
Descanso is gearing up for the summer
season with 10 weeks of extended summer
hours, increased evening entertainment and
the return of the Camellia Lounge. Midweek
extended summer hours from June 21 to Aug.
25 are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. , Tuesdays-Thursdays.
For 10 weeks this summer, Descanso will
keep its doors open late for guests to enjoy the
Gardens in the cool of the evening. Enjoy family
programs, jazz concerts or a walk under the oaks
as the sun sets. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors/
students with ID, $3 children 5-12, free children
4 and younger. No reciprocal garden admissions
during extended hours of 4:30 to 8 p.m.

“CHEFS FOR A CURE” FUNDRAISER
Join the American Cancer Society’s “Chefs For
A Cure” Benefit on June 15 at Firenze Osteria of
Toluca Lake from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant
will provide all the food courtesy of Chef Fabio
Viviani, America’s Top Chef and a Season 5 Fan
Favorite. Quiet Hair Growing and DD Family
Supporters, two teams of the 2011 Sunland/
Tujunga Relay for Life, are hosting the event.
Tickets are $25 per person, which includes
non-alcoholic drinks. A cash & carry bar is
provided; and a silent auction will be a part of
the festivities. Donations for the silent auction

SUMMER NIGHT SWING COMING TO AMERICANA
The Glendale Pops Orchestra, led by artistic
director and conductor Matt Catingub, hosts
Summer Night Swing featuring Patti Austin
and Tierney Sutton at the Americana at Brand.
Summer Night Swing takes place on Thursday,
June 30 at 8 p.m. and is the second of a six-show
season.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission
concert series taking place every first and third
Wednesday from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. in the
newly restored chapel and sanctuary of the First
Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise
& Wilson, no religious affiliation).
On June 15 there will be featured a single
work, Robert Schumann Piano Quartet in Eb
Major, Op.47. Performing will be Jacqueline
Suzuki on violin, Victor de Almeida on viola, Pam
de Almeida on violoncello and Rosa LoGiudice
on piano.

VHH HOSTING WELLNESS LECTURE
Verdugo Hills Hospital will hold a free
community lecture on colorectal cancer on July
12 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. featuring Dr. AnaMaria
Garza. The lecture, titled “Colorectal Cancer:
What You Need to Know to Protect You and Your
Family,” will be held at the hospital’s council room
on the fourth floor lobby.
The lecture will address the importance of
early screenings, the effects of genetics on colon
cancer risk and available treatment options for
patients.

DOCENTS, VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR AUTRY,
DESCANSO, HOSPICE
Companion Hospice is recruiting volunteers
for its upcoming training program. Volunteers are
needed in the San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando
Valley and Simi Valley to relieve tired caregivers
for short periods of time or to help with errands
and shopping. Assignments will in the volunteer’s
geographical area.
Applicants will receive 16 hours of orientation
and training. Training programs will be held on
four Saturdays in October in Pasadena from 8:30

The Autry in Griffith Park is having a docent
class that is scheduled to start in June. The Autry
is recruiting interested individuals to attend
