AUTHORS COMING TO FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Thursday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts James Slocum, author of “Shadow of War.” The story is based on a journal written by 14-year-old boy Daniel Kippelstein during the spring of 1939. Daniel was forced to flee Prague with his sister after his father is killed by the Nazis. “Shadow of War” is filled with adventure and historical detail that will transport readers of any age.

On Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts Kaira Rouda author of “Here, Home, and Hope.”

Rouda’s witty reflections, self-deprecating humor and clever tactics in executing will have readers laughing out loud. The next instant, however, they might rant right along with her as her commitment to a sullen, anorexic teenager left on her doorstep tries her patience or as she reflects the boozy advances of a divorced neighbor. All this, and it’s still witty, uplifting and inspirational.

PARATROOPERS: HISTORY OF THE AIRBORNE DIVISIONS OF WWII SUBJECT OF MEETING

On Saturday, June 11 at 1 p.m., the Little Landers Historical Society will host a presentation entitled Paratroopers: History of the Airborne Divisions of WWII.

The speaker is Taylor Menadue, a high school sophomore. Despite his young age, Menadue is an accomplished WWII historian and an honorary member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Southern California Chapter. He is also a member of the re-enacting group from the 82nd Airborne WWII Living History Association whose motto is “Remembering History and Those Who Served.”  In addition to his presentation, Menadue will also display items from his collection.

Immediately following the presentation, Bolton Hall will have the honor of hosting the POW/MIA table ceremony.  This solemn dignified ceremony is a tribute to the POW/MIA still missing from all wars.  The ceremony will be conducted by the Polytechnic High School JROTC.

The program is free. Everyone is welcome.

SPRING CERAMICS SALE AT CCLCF

The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge is holding its semi-annual ceramic show on June 10 and June 11.  Featuring work from more than 50 local ceramic artists, the show will open with a reception including light refreshments on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will continue on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

CONCERT AT BRAND LIBRARY

On Sunday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m., the Associates of Brand Library & Art Center will host the fourth concert in its annual music series. The Helios Guitar Quartet will be performing the complete first book of the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach arranged for four guitars. This concert will be in the Brand Library Recital Hall. Admission is free and a reception for the artists will follow the concert.

DESCANSO GARDENS PRESENTS SUMMER IN THE GARDENS

Descanso is gearing up for the summer season with 10 weeks of extended summer hours, increased evening entertainment and the return of the Camellia Lounge. Midweek extended summer hours from June 21 to Aug. 25 are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays-Thursdays.

Descanso will keep its doors open late for guests to enjoy the Gardens in the cool of the evening. Enjoy family programs, jazz concerts or a walk under the oaks as the sun sets. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors/students with ID, $3 children 5-12, free children 4 and younger. No reciprocal garden admissions during extended hours of 4:30 to 8 p.m.

“CHEFS FOR A CURE” FUNDRAISER

Join the American Cancer Society’s “Chefs For A Cure” benefit on June 15 at Firenze Osteria of Toluca Lake from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The restaurant will provide all the food courtesy of Chef Fabio Viviani, America’s Top Chef and a Season 5 Fan Favorite. Quiet Hair Growing and DD Family Supporters, two teams of the 2011 Sunland/Tujunga Relay for Life, are hosting the event.

Tickets are $25 per person, which includes non-alcoholic drinks. A cash & carry bar is provided; and a silent auction will be a part of the festivities. Donations for the silent auction are requested.

SUMMER NIGHT SWING COMING TO AMERICANA

The Glendale Pops Orchestra, led by artistic director and conductor Matt Catingub, hosts Summer Night Swing featuring Patti Austin and Tierney Sutton at the Americana at Brand. Summer Night Swing takes place on Thursday, June 30 at 8 p.m. and is the second of a six-show season.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the newly restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

On June 15, there will be featured a single work, Robert Schumann Piano Quartet in Eb Major, Op.47. Performing will be Jacqueline Suzuki on violin, Victor de Almeida on viola, Pam de Almeida on violoncello and Rosa LoGiudice on piano.
