C amille Johnson, Nathaniel Homan, Jessica Gallegos and Helene Cook, with Leonard Ghazarian of the CV Chamber of Commerce, each received a $250 scholarship from the chamber.Montrose Verdugo Chamber of Commerce held their 15th Annual Par 3 Masters, formerly known as the “Golf Classic,” recently at Verdugo Hills Golf Course. Before golfers enjoyed a day on the links, they had lunch provided by Three Drunken Goats, Giuseppe’s, Sake Sushi and Sun Palace. The event was a little different this year. Event chair Joe Allen added a twist of advertising incentives. Sponsors of the event made commercials that Allen edited into a presentation for the tournament. A day on the golf course is fun but with the Chamber there was an additional benefit of helping local kids with their education. Each year the event raises money for scholarships. “The scholarships are given out, the kids go off to school and we don’t hear from them,” Allen said. He thought it would be beneficial if those who contributed to the scholarship heard from past recipients. He contacted some of the former awardees and had them share their stories of where in college they are and how the scholarship helped them. Their stories were displayed on a flat screen television that was positioned in the courtyard of the VH Golf Course. At the end of the day, this year’s chamber recipients were Brett Cruz, Leah Iverson, Helene Cook, Kate Redmond and Savannah Rhoads shown above with chamber president Scott Trulik.Crescenta Valley Town Council had to flip a lot of pancakes to support students of Crescenta Valley with scholarships. Each year CVTC raises funds for the scholarship program that honors outstanding students in the area. This year the recipients were, from left to right: Andrea Kizyma – Lucille C. From Crescenta Valley High School, the recipients are Nathaniel Homan, Tiffany Lam and Joyce Lee. Recipients from La Cañada High School are Katherine Brown, Kayla McCue and Estrella Sainburg.The La Crescenta Woman’s Club honored three Crescenta Valley High School women by giving them scholarships at a luncheon on Wednesday, June 8. Andrea Kizyma, Daniella Camarillo and Leslie Park (shown at right) were each given a $500 scholarship for their outstanding achievements in community service, academics and extracurricular activities. The girls, along with their parents and CVHS counselors, joined the club for an award ceremony. After introducing each woman and her achievements, the club ate lunch together. Andrea Kizyma planned to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, majoring in either business or economics. Her extracurricular activities included the marching band and speech and debate. Daniella Camarillo planned to pursue zoology. She has done volunteer work at the Pasadena Humane Society. Her hobbies included figure skating, dancing, photography and swimming. Leslie Park received the Roberta Kurtz award, which is reserved for students interested in the arts. She will attend Pasadena Art Center College of Design. She hoped to go into entertainment, perhaps working for Pixar. There were about 30 to 40 applicants. The Woman’s Club interviewed eight to 10 of them and decided the winners would be Kizyma, Camarillo and Park. The La Crescenta Woman’s Club has been around for 100 years. They give money every month to different groups like Boy Scouts and the fire department. “These kids are outstanding,” said Gloria Lee, a member of the club. “I was actually surprised I got it. I didn’t think I’d get it,” said Park. “When I came here, I realized I got something I could be really proud of.” Maddy PumiliaGlendale Latino Association provides annual scholarships to local high schools and Glendale Community College graduating students who have demonstrated educational excellence and extraordinary citizenship. The organization brings together business and professionals to promote activities that improve education system. Fundraisers are held throughout the year to raise funds for the scholarships. The organization was founded in 1992 and since then has worked to both improve and to make a difference in the community. Local winners of this year’s scholarships are (from Crescenta Valley High School) Daniella Camarillo who will be studying Animal Science at UC Santa Barbara, Daniella Rivera Ferrigno will be studying Theatre Psychology at New York University and Hazel Duran will be in the pharmacist department at Whittier College. Andrew Fagundo will be studying Political Science at Cal State L.A. Brittany Urenda will be studying Theatre at Cal State L.A. From Clark High School, Diana Antonio will be studying nursing at Cal State L.A. From GCC, Maria Nina is going to study nursing at Cal State L.A. and Diego Castillo Gonzalez will be studying Computer Science at Cal-Poly.
