National HIV Testing Day
Assemblymember Anthony Portantino in cooperation with the Pasadena Department of Public Health is inviting San Gabriel Valley residents to join him at the Rose Bowl for the National HIV Testing Day on June 26 from 12p.m. to 4:00 pm. The testing will be done at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, Lot B.  Join Assemblymember Portantino at 1pm as he takes his HIV test. The state Office of AIDS estimates that thousands of Californians are unaware that they are living with HIV.  That is thousands of people who are not getting treatment and who are potentially infecting others.  HIV screening is important to identify those infected, get them into treatment, change their behaviors and prevent further transmission of HIV. Health department workers using a quick-result swab that provides results within 20 minutes will administer the test. Pasadena Public Health provides the free confidential testing and counseling. HIV/AIDS educational materials and resource tables will be available. Pasadena Firefighters Association will provide hog Dogs. Community Plan Meeting Coming Soon
There will be an information meeting on Wednesday, June 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sparr Heights Community Center to review the North Glendale Community Plan before it goes to the Glendale City Council. This plan will offer guidelines as to the zoning for buildings in the incorporated area of La Crescenta specifically along Foothill Boulevard.
The public is encouraged to attend.

Summer Fund Drive
The summer months are one of the cruelest times for cats, dogs and other animals here in the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA.  We have seen families go on vacation and leave their pets alone without adequate food or water. People move and leave their pets behind. In extreme cases, dogs are chained to trees or fences and left outside to fend for themselves for days on end.

Save Lives: Slow for the Cone Zone
A Caltrans worker killed on a freeway ramp is the third to die in So Cal since May.
Caltrans announced that Richard Gonzalez, a 52-year-old Caltrans maintenance worker, died shortly before 9 a.m. Monday after being struck by a vehicle while he was picking up litter along the northbound Interstate 15 connector ramp to eastbound State Route 94 in San Diego.
He is the third Caltrans worker to die on the job in 48 days – the most ever in such a short period of time.
On May 4, Stephen Palmer, Sr. was struck by a trolley and killed in National City near San Diego. On June 7, Jaime Obeso was killed by an errant vehicle while working on Interstate 8 in Imperial County.
Caltrans has called a statewide safety stand down to emphasize safety procedures. All routine or regularly scheduled highway maintenance activities are being temporarily halted to revisit and reinforce all aspects of field safety and to ask the public for help. Caltrans will post notices on its statewide network of more than 700 electronic highway message signs reminding motorists to watch out for Caltrans employees.
Highway construction and maintenance work is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. The risk of death is seven times greater for highway workers than for the average worker. Since the 1920s, 178 Caltrans employees have died while on the job.
