Every 10 years the U.S. counts, or attempts to count, every citizen in a process called decennial census. Once that process is completed and the number of residents within Los Angeles County has been counted that population must be divided as evenly as possible into the five supervisorial districts for the County of L.A. Board of Supervisors.
The last census for the area was completed in April 2010. The process of redistricting is well underway.
There are 19 plans that the Commission on Redistricting will review, according to Tony Bell, assistant chief deputy for Supervisor Michael Antonovich.
Out of the 19 there are some changes that have worried the president of the Crescenta Valley Town Council, Cheryl Davis.
“There are a couple of plans that would take us out of Supervisor Antonovich’s district,” Davis said.
She added one of the proposed plans has La Crescenta in a separate district from Altadena.
“We need to stay together with Altadena and Tujunga for our community,” she said.
Davis pointed out the foothills communities that were affected by the Station Fire, including Altadena, Tujunga, La Cañada and La Crescenta, have specific needs for the region.
In addition to communities staying together Davis said it was important to keep Antonovich as the area’s supervisor.
“He has done so much for us,” she said. “He has provided crossing guards, and has helped with Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Coalition and been so supportive for the dog park. He is our supervisor.”
Antonovich lives in Glendale and knows the area well. He was in La Crescenta immediately after the Station Fire began. He was and continues to be a strong critic of the handling of the fire. He has worked closely with the Crescenta Valley Town Council and the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce on numerous projects. He was a strong proponent of the new La Crescenta Library and both he and his staff attend several events throughout La Crescenta.
Davis advises residents of the area to share their opinion with the Commission on Redistricting.
“Whether you like the way the district is now or you want a change I want people to know they are looking at redistricting plans. They should speak up,” Davis said.
The commission will begin deliberations on the 19 plans on July 6. For information on the plans or to comment go to http://redistricting.lacounty.gov.
