Sheriffs on the Look-Out
For the sixth year, Crescenta Valley Station will participate in Operation Chill.
Since 1996, the 7-Eleven Corporation has sponsored Operation Chill which is a program that allows law enforcement officers to “ticket” youngsters they observe doing good deeds or exhibiting positive behavior. The ticket is actually a coupon good for a free 12-oz Slurpee at any participating 7-Eleven store. In addition to rewarding good behavior by youth, Operation Chill offers opportunities for officers to interface with youngsters in a non-law-enforcement situation. Some additional uses for the coupons may include rewarding kids for wearing their bicycle helmets, doing good deeds, participating in community activities, picking up trash, deterring crime or observing any state or local law. The coupons offer an ideal way to establish rapport with kids in the communities where law enforcement patrols.
Though the reasons for being “ticketed” may vary, the end result is the same for every youngster: a free Slurpee drink and a smile.

Local Second Grader to Sing National Anthem
Dana Lee Ryan, 8, a second grade student at Mountain Avenue Elementary School, is scheduled to sing the National Anthem before the start of the San Diego Padres versus the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game on Wednesday, July 27 at 7:05 p.m. at Petco Park.
Dana Lee is a Brownie in Troop 15741 that includes students from La Cañada, La Crescenta and Tujunga schools. She was a Molly Petit Award recipient in the La Cañada Junior Baseball Softball Association’s Rookie Division. She plays AYSO soccer and has two dogs, Greta and Bailey. She has been featured in several plays through La Cañada Jr. Theatre group.
