With a smile as wide as her native state of Texas, KNBC News Anchor Kathy Vara shared her experiences as a newscaster with members of the La Cañada Kiwanis Club at their recent regular weekly luncheon meeting held at Descanso Gardens.
Vara said that she always wanted to be a newscaster and began her career at Mortech College where she hosted a 30-minute newscast broadcast throughout the campus.
“I worked to get into the news business early because I always knew I wanted to be one of those people on television who I watched every day,” Vara recalled.
She detailed her successful career that included work in Washington, D.C. before settling in Los Angeles.
After her presentation, Kiwanis president Bill Watts gave Vara a special coffee mug, urging her to keep it on her desk while on air. She promised to do so and the day after her appearance told her listeners about her visit to La Cañada Flintridge and the fun time she spent with members of the local service club. While telling about her experience, she sipped coffee from her new Kiwanis cup.
Vara charmed the Kiwanis members as she told about her passion for animals. She is the proud owner of two dogs, two horses and a cockatiel. She said that looks forward to the time when she can retire and start a ranch where she can teach people who have been injured how to ride and enjoys horses.
