Today at about 1 a.m. a bear was sighted eating from residential trash cans in a neighborhood near the Verdugo Mountains near the Foothill (210) Freeway and Honolulu Avenue.
Glendale police advise residents to avoid attracting bears into their neighborhood and keep trash and recycle bins secured until the morning of regular garbage pick-up. If a bear is encountered, walk in the opposite direction but do not run. Also, make noise like yelling, clapping hands or banging on something.
Bears are looking for food but are more likely to leave upon seeing a person than to attack, according to Glendale police.
