William J. Hurd of Mesquite, Nev. and Steamboat Springs, Colo., system architect for deep space communications systems, has received the Golden Knight Award from his alma mater Clarkson University.

Presented each year during Reunion Weekend, Clarkson’s most prestigious alumni award is given to alumni who have distinguished themselves either by service to Clarkson through Alumni Association activities or have demonstrated outstanding career achievement, bringing distinction to themselves and to Clarkson.

Hurd grew up in Uniondale, N.Y., and graduated from Hempstead High School. He lived from 1968-2008 in La Cañada Flintridge.

Anna Dale Applebaum and Nisha Kae Chatterje, both of La Cañada Flintridge, were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. They are graduates of La Cañada High School and are enrolled in the university’s College of Arts & Sciences.

Also named to the dean’s list was Linda Michelle Donaldson of Glendale, a graduate of Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada who is also enrolled in the university’s College of Arts & Sciences.

To qualify for the dean’s list in the College of Arts & Sciences, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.

Washington University is counted among the world’s leaders in teaching and research, and it draws students and faculty to St. Louis from all 50 states and more than 110 nations. The total student body is nearly 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

Charles Goddard of La Cañada Flintridge chose to join 86 other students from around the world to form the ninth freshmen class at the highly selective Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Mass.

Olin College is an undergraduate engineering college offering an innovative
curriculum that aims to produce technological leaders. Olin’s unusual approach to engineering education incorporates entrepreneurship as well as the arts, humanities
and social sciences. Interdisciplinary, project-based learning is the hallmark of Olin’s academic program.
