At its regular dinner meeting at Clancy’s Crab Broiler Restaurant on Tuesday, Aug. 2, the Jewel City Kiwanis of Glendale presented a check to Michelle Roberts, executive director of the Glendale YWCA.
The donation was much appreciated as Roberts explained that approximately 86 women and children needed the services of the Battered Women Shelter last year. There is only room for 12 to 17 at the shelter. For every one woman, five are turned away. The shelter does attempt to find other shelters for those they cannot accommodate.
At the shelter, those who need it are offered free services such as legal advice, counseling, case management and child programs. Last year, the shelter’s hot line received approximately 1,600 calls for help. The Battered Women Shelter telephone number is (818) 242-1106.
The Jewel City Kiwanis Club meets every Tuesday evening at Clancy’s Crab Broiler in Glendale.
