La Cañada merchants were found Saturday taking their business to the street and offering big discounts for the entire community.

Although the turnout wasn’t quite what the merchants wanted, they still had a chance to showcase their products ranging from purses, flip-flops, clothes, jewelry, memo pads, juice and more. Most of the action was centered at the three shopping centers off Gould Avenue, from Angel’s Nest to Malfi’s.

At the main location shoppers found deals offered by Adobe Design, POP Nails, Stephanie’s Art Gallery, Angel’s Nest, Cañada Jewelry and Gifts and Taco Deli. La Cañada Books and Toys, Cowgirl Princess and The Apple Cart also set up their own sidewalk sale at their store location.

Sue Stranger of Adobe Design organized the event. She said that August was a slow month, so she created the event because she was “just trying to create some visibility.” She added the event was a way to generate new customers.

“Sue worked so hard,” said Linda Stepanion of Stephanie’s Art Gallery.

“I like to participate in all the events the retailers are doing for the community,” said Peggy Stevens, owner of the Apple Cart. The Apple Cart was selling flip-flops and purses for 50% off.

“We had a pretty steady morning,” Stevens said.

Maggie Abajian of Cañada Jewelry and Gifts also said that the morning was busy.

Taco Deli was introducing a part of its menu many people were unaware of. People could take fruits and vegetables like carrots, apples, spinach and watermelon and the workers at Taco Deli would juice it right on the sidewalk. Usually each juice costs $4, but Taco Deli was selling them at a discount for $3.

La Cañada Books and Toys is continuing its sidewalk sale through Sept.  10 to tie into La Cañada’s 9.10.11. celebration. The sale is on selected games, plush toys, Legos, baby items, webkinz and Thomas the Tank engine items. The price ranges from 20% to 50% off. They are also giving 10% of the “core lit” sales to LCUSD schools’ PTA.

“We thought it’d be good for merchants to get together,” said Yvonne Navarro of Angel’s Nest.

At Cañada Jewelry and Gifts, business was also brisk.
