Breakfast at the Black Cow Café

There’s nothing like a French coffee press and the Crescenta Valley Weekly with your breakfast at the Black Cow Café.

Tea Leoni and Nicholas Cage are just waking up in “Family Man,” one of my favorite movies. She turns to him, eyes squinting, and says, “Strong coffee, Jack.” Well the Black Cow must have been listening when they brought the French coffee press to Montrose. After enjoying their Kenyan and Brazil blends, you won’t call us sleepy any more.

Sitting outside at a café table on Honolulu Avenue and watching the world go by with your coffee press is one of Montrose’s great pleasures. You can usually find me there after an MSPA board meeting in that small window of time before my store opens. Heaven!

Have you ever taken the time to read the Black Cow’s breakfast menu? I could write about it for weeks! The BC prides itself on combining traditional and unique dishes, but even with the traditional they always add that special touch. I’m talking homemade jam with your toast. Yes, it’s made right there and the flavors change so you don’t get bored. Oatmeal is served with fresh cream and candied pecans! Who else does this?

Now for the unique, manager Victor Favela clued me in on their newest offering, crab cake Benedict with orange hollandaise. For those who like a hearty spread, there’s country fried chicken steak with gravy or pork chops and eggs with jalapeno cheddar bisquits and gravy.

One of their bestsellers is corn flake crusted French toast with fresh fruit. The southern skillet comes with house made corn pudding and cheddar cheese sauce. Are you getting hungry yet?

If you are on a budget, try the chicken apple sausage crepe with maple cream for only $5.95. There are also fresh muffins, scones, croissants, strudels and cinnamon rolls. On weekends you can get made-to-order buttermilk waffles with peach raspberry compote. News: They just added blueberry waffles sprinkled with powdered sugar.

So check the menu out for yourself at www.theblackcowcafe.com and visit them at 2219 Honolulu Ave. The gourmet coffee bar opens every day at 7 a.m. Breakfast is served Tuesday through Sunday.
See you in the Montrose Shopping Park.

Mary Dawson serves as vice president for the MSPA board. She and her family own Revelation Tops and Mountain Rose Gifts.
