After a tune up last week, Falcon football looks to erase memories of a disappointing 2010 beginning Friday

With only a day left until the start of the season, the Crescenta Valley Falcons tested their skills against Monrovia High School during a scrimmage Sept. 1.
“It was great,” Head Coach Paul Schilling said about the scrimmage. “The most important thing was there were no injuries. [We’d] hate to lose a kid to injuries in a scrimmage.”
Both the Falcons Varsity and JV teams competed at Monrovia. Monrovia won the CIF championship last year. Schilling said it was good to go against such a quality team. The Falcon team ran 10 plays on offense. After that, Monrovia’s offense took the field.
Because of this, it was hard to tell which team was winning. Schilling said that the Falcons moved the ball on offense and that the players who were known as the clear starters lived up to expectations. Schilling mentioned tight end and defensive lineman Max Cunning, who caught a few passes, as well as quarterback Zac Wilkerson.
“Zac did well,” Schilling said. “He threw the ball well.”
Wilkerson was up against Ellis McCarthy, Monrovia’s defensive tackle. McCarthy is one of the most recruited players in the country.
“I think we did well,” said offensive tackle Colin Murphy about Thursday’s scrimmage.
“It’s good for our team to play against another team, so we get different looks and different formations,” added defensive lineman Josh Silverman.
CV went just 4-6 last season under Schilling, his first season as head coach after serving as an assistant.
On Friday, the Falcons go up against their first opponent Santa Paula in a non-Pacific League game. Santa Paula is in the Tri-Valley League. The game takes place at Moyse Field at Glendale High School, which acts as CV’s home field during the season (1440 E. Broadway). Last year, Santa Paula was 5-6 overall and 1-3 in league.
“I think they are a pretty good team,” said defensive lineman Mitchell Skinner. “We’ve been watching them [on film] for weeks.”
After Santa Paula, the Falcons face St. Francis on Sept. 16 and La Cañada on Sept. 23. The games take place at St. Francis High School and La Cañada High School. Like Santa Paula, these two games are non-league.
On Sept. 30, the Falcons begin their quest in the Pacific League by playing Hoover High School at Moyse Field.
