Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) recently received a $1,750 leadership grant for 12 of its nurses to attend a workshop titled “Leadership Skills for the Registered Nurse.” The grant was made possible by a donation from the Mary Pinola/Crescenta Valley Educational Endowment Fund.

“The leadership workshop for our registered nurses is an outstanding opportunity for our nurse leaders to learn new skills and strategies in the clinical setting,” said Andrea Terry, RN, MSN, director of Education and Staff Development at VHH. “These nurses bring a passion and commitment for excellence in patient care as they serve as mentors and role models. We are extremely grateful to the Mary Pinola/Crescenta Valley Educational Endowment fund for their commitment to nursing education and healthcare excellence.”

The workshop, held on Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 at VHH, helped the hospital’s charge nurses increase their leadership skills in order to develop a stronger nursing team by promoting job satisfaction, productivity and patient safety. The workshop also reviewed key concepts of emotional intelligence, as well as how to apply emotionally intelligent traits to key nursing leadership skills. The workshop was facilitated by Christine Horton, a registered nurse and chief clinical officer for Flex Ed, a medical training company that provides continuing education programs for healthcare professionals.
