The Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce is recognizing the good works of local businesses and residents and the surprised recipients now need to decide what to wear to the 2011 Recognition Awards on Oct. 27.
Each year the Chamber receives nominations of people from all walks of life with one common goal of serving their community. A Chamber committee reviews all the nominations and presents them to the executive board for their vote.
Man of the Year, Neil Ryan, had just won his softball game on Tuesday night and came to Leo’s Bar and Grill to celebrate.
Members of the Chamber of Commerce surprise awardees at their place of business or at local meetings. The awardees so far are CVHS band director Mat Schick, CVHS senior student Molly Shelton, CERT organizers Paul and Lisa Dutton, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Marcelo Ruiz, Neil Ryan, Camille Levee, California Highway Patrol Award Officer Ming-Yang hsu and Glendale Police Officers Sue Shine and Mario Yagoda.
Awardees are still being notified.
On Monday, Organization of the Year was awarded to CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). President Paul Dutton and his wife Lisa, who is also a fellow CERT member, were notified as they arrived for what they thought was a meeting at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.Also on Monday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Award recipient Deputy Marcelo Ruiz was not scheduled to be on duty but just happened to be in at the right moment.CVHS senior Molly Shelton was recognized as Student of the Year. The announcement was made Friday while she was in her CVHS Advanced Dance class.
