Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) recently welcomed John S. Gambol, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Gambol has joined the hospital’s Wound Care Advantage program, which uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to heal chronic wounds.

“I have used hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat wounds that patients have had for years,” said Dr. Gambol, who specializes in Emergency and hyperbaric medicine. “Imagine having a non-healing wound for 3 to 5 years, and then having it healed within 3 months using HBOT. That’s what we do at the wound center.”

HBOT is an effective adjunctive therapy used in conjunction with advanced wound care. Along with proper attention to nutrition, infection and other underlying medical problems, we achieve greater healing results. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the medical use of 100% oxygen in a pressurized environment. The increased level of oxygen and pressure enters the blood and body tissues and increases the rate of wound healing. The therapy currently has a 97% healing rate.

Dr. Gambol received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He served as chief resident of Emergency Medicine at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. He is board certified in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.
