Quarterback Club Holding Meetings

The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club meets every Tuesday until Thanksgiving at the Glendale Elks Club at 11:30 a.m. There are guest speakers and coaches from local schools Glendale Community College, Glendale High, Hoover High, Crescenta Valley High, St. Francis High and Village Christian High Schools update the membership on their progress through the season.

Food Truck Rally coming to RBAC

The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center is hosting a Food Truck Rally on Friday evening, Sept. 30, poolside at the RBAC. Starting at 6 p.m. the event will include gourmet fare from a variety of award-winning innovative food trucks, musical entertainment and more! Proceeds will benefit the RBAC, a non-profit organization offering over 100 hours of programming weekly in aquatic instruction, competition, training, therapy and recreation as well as fitness programs for the young to the young-at-heart in their 90s.

Reyna to appear at bookstore

On Sunday, Oct. 2 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse hosts a reading for writer and Pasadena resident Thelma T. Reyna. The noted author shares selections from her recent book of poetry “Breath & Bone

Glendale Historical Society holding Fall Home Tour

The Glendale Historical Society hosts a fall home tour entitled, Glendale Gems: Historic Homes of the Jewel City on Sunday, Oct. 2.

This year’s home tour will celebrate the variety of architecturally significant homes listed by the City of Glendale on the local Register of Historic Resources.

The homes will be open for docent-led tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance for $30 per person, $20 for TGHS members, at www.glendalehistorical.org or by calling (818) 242-7447. Pre-paid tickets will not be mailed, but can be picked up on the day of the tour at the historic Brand Library, located in Brand Park at 1601 Mountain St. in Glendale.

Tickets will also be available for sale on the day of the tour starting at 10:30 a.m. for $35, $25 for TGHS members, at the Brand Library.

CV Arts Council Paint Out 2011

Calling all artists for the second annual 2011 Crescenta Valley Paint Out, sponsored by the Crescenta Valley Arts Council! Folk Tales of Sunland-Tujunga

In the Sunland-Tujunga area, folk tales and creepy stories abound. Some are based on real events and others have been created in the minds of the authors.  Come and hear several of these stories on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. when the Little Landers Historical Society hosts Folk Tales of Sunland-Tujunga. A booklet of some of these stories will be available after the program for a nominal donation.

The program is free.  Everyone is welcome.  It is being held at Bolton Hall Museum.

AAUW Hosting Maria Schellpfeffer

The American Association of University Women, Glendale Branch, next meets on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. at the Oakmont Country Club. Guest speaker will be Maria Schellpfeffer who leads the Mission Planning and Sequencing Team for the Juno Mission to Jupiter at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Schellpfeffer has also worked on several other deep space robotic missions including the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers, and the 2007 Mars Phoenix Lander.

Rehrmann Exhibit at White’s

Fine artist Marina K. Rehrmann, 2nd vice president of the Glendale Art Association (GAA), will show her latest works along with other local artists at the upcoming juried art exhibition GAA’s Fall Salon during the month of October at White’s Framing and Art Restoration Gallery in Montrose. The artists’ reception is on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include an evening of fine art, fine food and fine music. A portion of the purchase proceeds will sponsor art scholarships for local high school students, a tradition of the GAA since it started in 1922. Rehrmann’s works will also appear in the GAA exhibit at Unity Fest Glendale on Sunday, Oct. 16 from noon to 5 p.m. on Brand Boulevard.

Sets and step square dance offers new class

The Sets and Step Square Dance Club is sponsoring a new square dance class for beginners or those who want to refresh their dancing. Class is on Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the La Cañada Community Center. First three dances are free. Social time with hors d’oeuvres before class to introduce the class.

A Civilization Defined: The Western Tradition – a Journey in Art at Library

The La Crescenta Library hosts A Civilization Defined: The Western Tradition – a Journey in Art, a lecture series by Dr. Jill Kiefer.

On this artistic time traveling adventure, attendees will learn about art, culture and history through the ages and also get the real scoop on the gossip and scandals that run throughout the tradition. The series is presented on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. through October. On Oct. 5, the subject is Postmodernism and Contemporary Trends: Evolving Winds of Change.

Keifer is a professor of art history in the Graduate Humanities program at Mount Saint Mary’s College.  She also teaches at Pasadena City College, Glendale College and the Palos Verde Art Center. Currently she is writing and producing an art history series and studio workshop series.

9-11: A Remembrance in Poems

Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse is hosting 9-11: A Remembrance in Poems through Friday, Sept. 30. The display is a juried selection of poems reflecting on the events of 9-11-01 from local poets’ groups. Of those submitted, 25 will be posted on the walls of the bookstore, and awards for first, second and third place will be acknowledged.

Attention Music Lovers

Dr. Ted Stern, professor of Music at Glendale Community College, is again conducting off-campus music appreciation classes for adults. This semester will cover the topic “Singing As Cultural Expression.”

Each semester offers new and interesting information. Dr. Stern weaves music examples with cultural history to increase the listeners’ understanding of the evolution of music. Classes are held at the CV United Methodist Church each Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Dec. 13. The cost for the series of 15 weekly classes is $90. All are welcome. VHH Offers Beginnings

The Verdugo Hills Hospital BEGINNINGS Family Education Program offers babysitting classes designed for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. The babysitting class is an interactive course that teaches participants valuable skills, including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other helpful childcare advice. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a babysitting course completion certificate.

Upcoming babysitting classes are Oct. 29 and Nov. 26. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at VHH in the Council Room (located on the fourth floor).

DOCENTS, volunteers Sought for autry, descanso, Hospice

Companion Hospice is recruiting volunteers for its upcoming training program. Volunteers are needed in the San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley to relieve tired caregivers for short periods of time or to help with errands and shopping. Assignments will in the volunteer’s geographical area.

CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED

Former members of choral groups at Crescenta Valley High School are invited to take part in the CVHS Alumni Chorale. The group, composed of CVHS choral alumni men and women, rehearse once a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United Methodist Church. The group performs for local civic groups and retirement homes in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose and Duarte during the holiday season and again in the late spring/early summer. After the holiday season performances the group will resume rehearsals in the middle of January 2011.
