CV ARTS COUNCIL PAINT OUT 2011

Calling all artists for the second annual 2011 Crescenta Valley Paint Out, sponsored by the Crescenta Valley Arts Council! It’s an exciting opportunity for local artists to capture the architecture and natural settings of the Crescenta Valley on canvas, and display their artwork in a juried exhibition.  Awards categories include adult, youth, best in show, community favorite, and theme award for best expression of the Crescenta Valley. ENCORE PROGRAM FEATURES JAZZ MUSICIAN
In its third week of the fall series, the Encore guest speaker program of Glendale Community College presents professional jazz musician Randall Willis at its 10 a.m. program on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Willis, a former music teacher in the L.A. School district for 10 years, will bring his saxophone along for a few tunes as part of the program. He is associated with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra in its jazz concerts heard in the L.A. area and has played several times at Hollywood Bowl with that group.

Featured speaker at 1 p.m. will be Dr. Spasoje “Mike” Neskovic, a practicing Glendale physician who will speak on Prevention for Seniors. He was born and raised in Yugoslavia where he began his medical practice in 1977 after graduating from the university of Belgrade. Recognized in his field in the U.S., he completed his training at UCLA, University of Illinois and Northwestern University.

Encore has a new meeting location at the new Glendale Adult Recreation Center at Louise and Colorado streets.

Visitors are welcome.


REHRMANN EXHIBIT AT WHITE’S

Fine artist Marina K. Rehrmann, 2nd vice president of the Glendale Art Association (GAA), will show her latest works along with other local artists at the upcoming juried art exhibition GAA’s Fall Salon during the month of October at White’s Framing and Art Restoration Gallery in Montrose. A portion of the purchase proceeds will sponsor art scholarships for local high school students, a tradition of the GAA since it started in 1922.

SONS OF NORWAY HOLDING EVENT

Join Edvard Grieg Lodge in Saturday, Oct. 22 for a Scandinavian cultural evening at 6 p.m. The evening includes a fun Norwegian language lesson, potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. and Sons of Norway history program at 7 p.m. This is a free event, and the public is invited. RECITAL BEING HELD

WAW Entertainment is holding a free recital at noon on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. Everyone is welcome. Singers from ages 6 to 17 will be performing their favorite pop songs. Light refreshments will be served.

SETS AND STEP SQUARE DANCE OFFERS NEW CLASS
The Sets and Step Square Dance Club is sponsoring a new square dance class for beginners or those who want to refresh their dancing. Class is on Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the La Cañada Community Center. First three dances are free. Social time with hors d’oeuvres before class to introduce the class.

AAUW JOINS CELEBRATION

AAUW celebrates 130 years of activism on behalf of women.  Glendale will join in celebration with other local chapters  at Almansor Court, 700 S. Almansor St., Alhambra on Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 pm.  Guest speaker is Kathleen Cha, AAUW national director at large speaking about AAUW history, mission and accomplishments.

The La Crescenta Woman’s Club is holding its annual Authors’ Luncheon on Nov. 8 at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.  The authors speaking this year will be Brett Battles, Denise Hamilton and Lynn Sheene.  The  $35 ticket includes program, lunch, door prizes, silent auction, and book signing.
