Partnering to Make a Better, Safer Community!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead, Cultural Anthropologist
One of the greatest things about our community and our city is our ability to partner together to make our community a better place. With the reduction of state and federal funds, cities have to rely more and more on their own ingenuity and creative thinking to run and get the job done without obtaining outside funds or resources. How a community functions affects every aspect of it; our businesses, our families, our children, our quality of life, our schooling and our reputation to the surrounding communities.
As I stated before, our community has found many ways to partner together on limited resources. Volunteer organizations like the Kiwanis, The Elks, The La Crescenta Woman’s club, Prom Plus, The Rotary Club, The Soroptomist Club, Neighbor Hood Watch Groups, Homeowners Associations, and other non-profit groups like local chambers of commerce, Glendale Healthy Kids and The YMCA all work together to “fill the gaps.”
The local Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition is another organization that is helping to provide resources to the Crescenta Valley to make it a safer community. This Saturday they are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Agency on their National Take Back Event to bring awareness to the rising problem of prescription drug abuse.
Prescription drug overdose is now the second leading cause of accidental death in the United States, second only to auto accidents. Approximately 26,000 Americans are dying from prescription drug overdoses annually, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Saturday’s event is a nationwide, bi-annual event to educate the public regarding the need to dispose of unused, no longer needed and expired medication. This event is intended to remind people of the dangers of misused, often stolen and expired medication in the household. Join the Coalition and the community and anonymously drop off anything in your house you need to dispose of.
As always, if you have any questions, want to become a member of the chamber or have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Chamber office.
