La Canada: 19 East L.A. Bobcats 20

At La Canada High School football field this past Sunday the La Canada Gladiators Junior Pee Wees lost a tough played game to the East Los Angeles Bobcats 19-20. With an offense of 167 yards rushing on 27 carries and 42 yards passing on 3 catches the Gladiators fell just 1 point short of a win against a strong Bobcat team. La Canada rushers were Elijah Washington with 17 carries for 155 net yards and 2 touchdowns, quarterback Joseph Reyes with 6 carries, Kai Aquila with 1 carry, Ian Goodstein with 1 carry and Angel Martinez with 2 carries.

The Bobcats put the first points on the board but the Gladiators came right back and scored on a 75 yard drive including runs of 26 and 34 yards by Elijah Washington. The score after 1 quarter was Gladiators 6 – Bobcats 7.

In the second quarter, the Gladiator defense had the rival Bobcats in a fourth and fifteen at the 39 yard line, when the runner squeezed through a rare hole in the Gladiator defense and found his way to the end zone. On the very next Gladiator possession, quarterback Joseph Reyes threw a perfect spiral to wide receiver Harrison Woo. Woo turned on the afterburners and outran the Bobcat secondary to the end zone for a 60 yard scoring reception. The score was knotted at 13 each. Late in the second quarter, the Bobcats added another score for a 20 to 13 halftime lead.

The Gladiators lightening quick offense consisted of front line blockers Evan Estrada, Clayton Esparza, William Henderson, Ashton Baron, Michael Eagan, Griffin Dilbeck, Blake Northrop and Marcelino Martinez and backfield players, Joseph Reyes, Tyler Shakibai, Elijah Washington, Harrison Woo, Kai Aguila, Angel Martinez, Chris Simonian, Miles Haxton, and Jacob Buntich.

The Gladiators Started off the third quarter and quickly made the game a nail biter. 3 plays and 55 yards later, the Gladiators had closed the gap to just one point on a 45 yard touchdown run by Elijah Washington. On the ensuing kickoff, the Gladiators caught the Bobcats off-guard with a perfectly executed on side kick by Chris Wood. The ball bounced off a Bobcat player and was alertly pounced upon by Garrett Hamilton. The Gladiator drive however would eventually stall.

The fourth quarter produced no scoring and the game would end Bobcats 20 – Gladiators 19.

After the game the coaches paid special accolades to the defensive unit for shutting down the Bobcat offense and not allowing them to score in the second half. That tough Gladiator defensive unit consists of front line players Will Stewart, Mitchell Espinosa, Ian Goodstein, Jack Rothgeb, Michael Egan, Garrett Hamilton, David Getzen, Derek Albanese, Jacob Buntich and secondary players consisting of Joseph Reyes, Elijah Washington, Evan Estrada, Jake George, Gaige Kier, Angel Martinez, Cade Vanneman, Chris Wood and Carson Okland.

The game was hard fought on both sides of the line with the LC defense coming on strong throughout the entire game. Tacklers for the La Canada squad were Chris Wood, Joseph Reyes, Jake George, Evan Estrada, Will Stewart, Angel Martinez, Michael Egan, David Getzen, Gaige Kier, Carson Okland, Mitchell Espinosa, Tyler Shakabai and Chris Simonian.

La Canada 46 East L.A. Bobcats 21

The Gladiators evened their record at 3-3 with their 3rd straight win Sunday, beating the East LA Bobcats 46-21 with their best overall performance of the season.  The Gladiator offense notched 16 first downs on their way to six TD’s, gaining over 325 yards on the ground led by Will McConnell’s 149 yards, and five different players scored.  The tenacious defense forced and recovered a fumble, stopped the Bobcat offense on several drives, and hit hard and as a team, as has been their trademark all season.

La Canada took the opening kick-off and put together a 13-play, six minute drive.  QB Andrew VanGinkel and backs Michael Chan, Jackson Totleben and McConnell followed the blocking of Kurtis McNevin, Theo Chamberlain, Peter Simmeth, Jules Buenabenta, Michael Doud, Jason Rowton and Gregory Dulcich to set an early tone of domination at the line of scrimmage.  All three backs shared the running duties, with McConnell’s 20 yard run and Totleben’s 4 yard plunge for the TD highlighting the drive.  The successful PAT kick opened an early 8-0 La Canada lead, but the Bobcats returned the kick-off for a touchdown, narrowing the lead to 8-7.  The La Canada offense went right back to work, and behind additional blocking from Kyle Ramirez, Jack Rappard, Drake Barron, Brandt Lukas and Justin Sabourin, they drove deep into Bobcat territory.  A key first down pick-up by Brian Erickson set up a McConnell 14-yard run, and Michael Chan ran it in from 5 yards out for a 16-7 Gladiator lead early in the second quarter.

The La Canada defense finally took the field, and linemen Nathan Gray, Jordan Kruglov, Chamberlain and Zachary Kejmar, defensive backs McNevin, Chan, Rowton, Doud and Totleben, and safeties McConnell and Dulcich made short work of the Bobcats drive, bottling up the run and forcing three incomplete passes to take over on downs at their own 38.  Behind fresh blocking support from Gavin Chi and David Lewis, VanGinkel passed to Dulcich for 9 yards, and then Chan broke through a huge hole opened by the offensive line to rumble 52 yards for his 2nd TD of the game (and 6th of the season), the successful kick making the score Gladiators 24, Bobcats 7.  East LA took over at their own 30, and the drive started with big tackles from Grady Schilling and Connor McGoldrick, before the Bobcats broke a pass play for a 49-yard TD, bringing the score to 24-14.  La Canada’s next drive stalled, but on the first play of the ensuing Bobcat drive, the defense, bolstered by Conrad Oakes, and Barron, forced a fumble recovered by McConnell at the Bobcat 18 with just over a minute to go in the half.  Following a short gain, McConnell and McNevin hooked up for an 11-yard TD pass, and a Chan on the following Bobcat drive ended the half with La Canada leading 32-14.

The Gladiator defense came roaring out for the second half, led by McNevin and Brandt Lukas, regaining the ball for La Canada after just 4 plays.  McConnell, Erickson, Totleben and Chan shared running duties, and starting from their own 36, the Gladiators engineered a 12-play drive, highlighted by a VanGinkel to Dulcich 11-yard pass, and Erickson’s 4-yard TD run, bringing the score to La Canada 38, East LA 14.  The Bobcats responded with a quick strike, scoring a 51-yard TD over the right side of the Gladiator line, so the beginning of the 4th quarter was 38-21 in La Canada’s favor.  On the next drive, McConnell broke a 25-yard run, Totleben and Grady Schilling gained 12, and McConnell hit Dulcich on a halfback option for an 8-yard TD, then converted the kick for a 46-21 La Canada lead.  A Nathan Gray sack stopped the ensuing Bobcat drive, and La Canada gained 3 first downs on runs by Drake Barron, Michael Doud, Brandt Lukas and Richard Berry to consume the rest of the game clock, and seal the 46-21 Gladiator victory.

Please join La Canada as they travel to meet the Rosemead Rebels the Jess Gonzales Sports Complex next Saturday, October 29th at 2:30p.m.
