LUNCHEON HOSTED BY PATRONS’ CLUB
“Viva Vaqueros” is the theme for this year’s 64th celebration of the Patrons’ Club of Glendale Community College.

The event will take place at The Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road in Burbank Friday, Nov. 4 at 11:30 a.m. and will include a luncheon, fashion show, silent auction and many prizes including a $1,000 cash prize.

The price for the luncheon is $45 per person, so reserve your admission early.

All proceeds go toward scholarships, grants-in-aid, and emergency funds for deserving students at the college. Last year the Patrons’ Club was able to award 34 scholarships due to the generosity of local businesses and community residents.

Fashions will be provided by Holiday Hats & Gowns and Men’s Wearhouse.

HEALTH FESTIVAL FOR FAMILIES
The Glendale Health Festival, a free event, is open to the community and takes place on Nov. 5 at the Pacific Community Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be food, entertainment and activities. There will also be free medical screenings, high blood pressure screenings, obesity and nutrition advice, cancer awareness and screenings, diabetes education and oral and eye health.

VHAA ART DEMONSTRATION
Artist Julie Snyder will be demonstrating in oils at the Verdugo Hills Art Association meeting on Friday, Nov. 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  She will focus on color and the secrets of a great palette. Snyder is a popular demonstrator, as she is insightful, interesting and entertaining.

During her demonstration, Snyder will use a live model for her figure painting.

Come early and buy as many raffle tickets as you think you’ll need to win. Snyder will pick the lucky ticket. The winner will be the model and gets to keep the painting!

The price is $5 for guests.

 CV ARTS COUNCIL PAINT OUT 2011
Calling all artists for the second annual 2011 Crescenta Valley Paint Out, sponsored by the Crescenta Valley Arts Council! It’s an exciting opportunity for local artists to capture the architecture and natural settings of the Crescenta Valley on canvas, and display their artwork in a juried exhibition.  Awards categories include adult, youth, best in show, community favorite, and theme award for best expression of the Crescenta Valley. TICKETS ON SALE FOR COMEDY NIGHT
The Glendale-Crescenta Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross presents the 20th Annual Fritz Coleman Comedy Night on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Glendale Centre Theatre.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Show tickets are $20 for open seating.

A special VIP event costs $60 for one person, $100 for two, and includes dinner before the show at 6 p.m. at Phoenicia Restaurant and reserved seating for the 7:30 p.m. show.

AAUW JOINS CELEBRATION
AAUW celebrates 130 years of activism on behalf of women.  Glendale will join in celebration with other local chapters  at Almansor Court, 700 S. Almansor St., Alhambra on Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Guest speaker is Kathleen Cha, AAUW national director at large speaking about AAUW history, mission and accomplishments.

DANCEART SHOW COMING UP
On Nov. 5, Benita Bike’s DanceArt will present a free interactive dance performance at 2 p.m. at the Lake View Terrace Library. Bring your friends and family to this afternoon of dance discovery.

FAMILY AFFAIR AT FLINTRIDGE
On Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse hosts a poetry and art event for photographer Christine Murphy and her mother, poet Viola Geary Odell. The featured book, “…While Wandering: A Photo-Poetic Journey Through California Landscapes,” is a collaboration of love that pairs the former’s images of the wilderness with the latter’s writing.  A selection of Murphy’s photographs is on view during the reading and a signing follows. To complete the afternoon, Murphy’s daughter, accomplished musician Carmel Helene, who has performed with such powerhouses as Miley Cyrus and Michael Bolton, plays an acoustic guitar set in the coffeehouse at 4:30 p.m. The significant talents of three generations of women are showcased in this program celebrating family and our precious natural environment.

AUTHORS LUNCHEON COMING UP
The La Crescenta Woman’s Club is holding its annual Authors’ Luncheon on Nov. 8 at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.  The authors speaking this year will be Brett Battles, Denise Hamilton and Lynn Sheene.  The  $35 ticket includes program, lunch, door prizes, silent auction, and book signing.

SIERRA CLUB HOSTING MEETING
The Sierra Club Crescenta Valley will present Mongolia, Tibet and the Gobi Desert with Fred Dong and Bruce Hale on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the upstairs meeting room of the La Crescenta Library.

Included will be visits to Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbatar, Gandan Khiid Temple and the Winter Palace of Bogd Khan.

PROGRAMS AT DESCANSO
Enjoy the garden inside and out this November when Descanso Gardens presents four programs sure to increase enjoyment of plants. Enjoy guided walks in the Gardens, learn new moves with your pruners and visit a local floral landmark.

Flower Mart Tour on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 a.m.: Take a morning jaunt to the L.A. Flower Mart with floral designer Ray Tucker. Learn the ins and outs of shopping this local landmark and get tips for decorating for the holidays. The cost is $25 nonmembers, $15 members. Advance registration required by Nov. 10. Fruit Tree Pruning on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m.: Rachel Young, native plant horticulturist, demonstrates techniques to prune fruit trees for beauty and maximum bounty. Heritage Oak Walk on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m.: Experience the giants in the Descanso landscape, the Coast live oaks (Quercus agrifolia). These trees, some centuries old, are the remainders of a forest that once blanketed the region. Descanso curator Wen Wang leads this informative walk. Free with Gardens admission.
