The students at Montrose Christian Montessori School gave two presentations on Nov. 10 in honor of veterans. The first one took place at a special flag ceremony at 11:45 a.m. when each class, pre-school to sixth grade, recited a poem or performed a song.

In the afternoon, the elementary students gave their presentations again to visiting veterans from American Legion: Mike Baldwin who served from 1966 to 1968 in Vietnam in the U.S. Army; Manuel Ramos from the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), in the Reactor Department; Roy Allmon, served 1959 to 1960 in the Congo in the Air Force; and Warren Spayth who served from 1968 to 1969 in Vietnam in the Marine Corps.

During the question and answer period, students asked the veterans a variety of questions and mentioned family members who had served in the armed services. The children learned that Ramos had been at sea for nine months without setting foot on land.

Baldwin described the difference between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day as sixth grader Julian explained, “Memorial Day remembers the soldiers that fought and died for us, Veteran’s Day is for soldiers that are still alive today that we can honor.”

Spayth encouraged all the children, particularly the older elementary students, to serve their country in some way. “Joining the military is not for everyone, however there are multiple ways to volunteer and serve our country,” he said.

The veterans were invited by the MCMS Parent Teacher Organization.
