On Saturday, the CV High School Robotics classes participated in the 14th annual JPL Invention Challenge.

Each year the challenge changes. This year, the objective is to create a device that kicks a regulation football over a two-meter wall into a trashcan five meters away within three attempts. Sinking the football in the trashcan or hitting the rim, side, or 2.5 diameter ring around the trashcan can result in points.

Select students from the Robotics classes at CV and other schools have worked for weeks to meet the challenge and find a solution that was both plausible and accurate.

At the preliminary competition at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, the three CV teams all won an award. One of the teams tied for second place with a score of 130 out of a possible 150 points. The other two teams both received awards for most creative in different categories.

Teams will be competing at the finals at JPL on Friday, Dec. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The top five teams from the two regional competitions and 10 teams with the most points between both regional competitions will be invited to compete at the finals. Two of the CV teams will be attending.
