A suspect that allegedly shot a state parole officer was taken into custody at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday after a manhunt that included closing down the Foothill (210) freeway for several hours.

“There are no other suspects being sought,” said Sgt. Rich Pena, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The shooting occurred in the 10600 block of Foothill Boulevard near  the 210 in Lake View Terrace about 1:30 p.m.

Traffic on the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway was backed up almost to the Glendale (2) Freeway. Foothill Boulevard was closed between Osborne Street and Wheatland Avenue.

Traffic along Foothill Boulevard in Sunland, Tujunga and La Crescenta was bumper to bumper as drivers attempted to find alternate routes.

A Command Center was established at the Lake View Terrace Equestrian Center, and the Special Weapons And Tactics – SWAT – team and K-9 units were called to assist in a joint effort between the California Dept. of Corrections and Rehailitation, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s  and L.A. Police Department  on tactical alert to double their manpower.

During a press conference  law enforcement officials said, the parole officer was shot in the face and transported to a local hospital.

“The officer is listed in stable condition,” said Lt. Eddie Hernandez, LASD.

The officer was part of the California Apprehension Team.

“The suspect appeared to engage the officers first,” Hernandez said.

After shooting, the suspect reportedly fled to a wooded area populated with trailers and abandoned buildings. Officers suspected he may have hid under a trailer. The area was contained as the search continued. An armored personnel carrier was stationed at the front of the property/containment area where the suspect was thought to be hiding.

Two private schools, the Delphi Academy of L.A. and Brainard Avenue Elementary School, were on lockdown as the manhunt continued.

The suspect is reportedly a two-strike (two felony counts) parolee and was wanted for a parole violation, said Lt. Andy Neiman, LAPD, during a press conference.
