SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTING CLASSES AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is hosting a series of parent education classes focusing on children with special needs and is co-sponsored by the City of La Cañada. This program is free and open to the community. Topics include neurobiological and psychological disorders along with issues that arise from parenting any child with special needs.  The classes meet weekly on Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Y starting on Jan. 12.

Topics and speakers for the next three sessions are:

Jan. 12 – The 3 Main Steps to Care for Yourself When You Have a Special Needs Child, presented by Pam Erdman, LMFT.

Jan. 19 – Building Healthy Relationships with Special Needs & Typical Developing Siblings, presented by Dr. Debra Kessler, Psy.D., H.N., M.N

Jan. 26 – Open Forum, Psychiatric Medications & Diagnosis. Opportunity to ask questions; presented by Dr. Richard Atkins, M.D. Psychiatry

LCWC HOSTING NIGHT AT THE RACES
The La Crescenta Woman’s Club, History Section, will hold a Night at the Races on Saturday, Jan. 14. AAUW CELEBRATES PAST PRESIDENTS
American Association of University Women, Glendale Branch will celebrate its 89th anniversary by honoring its past presidents on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Oakmont Country Club at 11 a.m.  Proceeds from the silent auction preceding the lunch support Tech Trek, a science summer camp for eighth grade girls.

Guest speaker is Pauline Field, founder and chair of 50/50 Leadership and U.S. Ambassador to World Leadership Day. Her topic is titled “Beyond Women’s Leadership.” Field is a founding member of Glendale’s Commission on the Status of Women and currently is a business manager/analyst for Kaiser Permanente.  Reservations are due by Jan. 11 and are $35. LITTLE LANDERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE
The next meeting of the Little Landers Historical Society takes place on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall. On the agenda is Dr. Chester King who will examine the origins of the early Native Americans who occupied the Tujunga area.

The historic village of Tujunga has been designated as being a Gabrielino or Tongva settlement in most sources. Study of the mission registers of San Fernando and San Gabriel Missions and other historic documents indicate that settlements along the base of the San Gabriel Mountains were of the Serrano nation. Tujunga was the western most of these settlements. Tujunga was unique in not having ties to the important Serrano settlement of Japchibit.

King has studied archeology since his high school days in the 1960s. He has a master’s from UCLA and a PhD in anthropology from UC Davis. He has researched the early baptismal records at several of the missions and discovered many interesting facts about the various tribes. He will discuss differences between the Tongva and Serrano nations and present evidence for Tujunga being a Serrano settlement.

MOONDAY ANNOUNCES JANUARY GUESTS
Moonday East is hosting Wanda Coleman & Douglas Kearney on Jan 15.

The work of Coleman has appeared in Ploughshares, Zyzzyva, Obsidian and Best American Poetry. A seminal figure of L.A.’s poetry underground, she has shared the stage with such cultural icons as Timothy Leary, Alice Coltrane, Allen Ginsberg, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos and Richard (Louie Louie) Barry. Coleman has published 18 books of poetry and fiction which include “Bathwater Wine,” winner of the 1999 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, the first African-American woman to receive the award, and Mercurochrome (poems), bronze-medal finalist, National Book Awards 2001.

Kearney’s first full-length collection of poems, “Fear, Some,” was published in 2006 by Red Hen Press. His second manuscript, “The Black Automaton,” was chosen by Catherine Wagner for the National Poetry Series and published by Fence Books in 2009. His poems have appeared in journals such as “Callaloo,” “jubilat” and “Ploughshares.” Born in Brooklyn, he currently teaches at CalArts.

CPR CLASSES AT VERDUGO HILLS HOSPITAL
Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) offers CPR training classes to community members and healthcare providers. VHH also offers Heartsaver – Automated External Defibrillator (AED) classes. These classes provide instruction for CPR skills, including adult/child one-person rescue, adult/child choking maneuvers and adult/child AED. Both Healthcare Provider new and renewal classes are also offered, as well as Infant CPR and CPR Instructor training.

Upcoming Heartsaver CPR classes will be held on Jan. 16 and Feb. 16 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Infant CPR classes are offered twice a month and cover from birth to one year of age. Classes are held on a Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on a Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. The fee is $30 per person.

ONCE UPON A TIME HOSTS EVENT
On Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m., Once Upon A Time bookstore is hosting the NY Times #1 national bestselling young adult author Jay Asher (“Thirteen Reasons Why”) and author Carolyn Mackler (“Tangled”) when they team up for “The Future of Us,” a fresh, lively tale about two high school kids in the early ‘90s discovering their not-yet-invented Facebook pages via a glitch in an AOL upload. This book for teens humorously explores how closely tied our future is to our past.  The book has received several starred reviews, and the movie rights to the book have been sold to Warner Bros.

‘PROGRESSIONS’ EXHIBIT AT FOREST LAWN
Forest Lawn is hosting Syd Mead: Progressions, a captivating exhibit of work by legendary artist Syd Mead Jan. 27  through April 15. The exhibit is a retrospective of more than 50 years of Mead’s artwork, ranging from selections from his academic years to his most current works.

The Syd Mead: Progressions exhibit demonstrates the artist’s uncanny ability to take contemporary concepts and translate them into believable and practical visions of the future. This unique talent has earned him the title of “Visual Futurist.” The exhibit includes finished paintings that capture everything from conceptual terrestrial and extraterrestrial vehicles to interplanetary resort destinations.

Verdugo Glen Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is hosting its first “Heart of Business Expo”on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Glendale Elks Lodge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event begins with networking and shopping with exhibitors such as Gigi Hill Handbags, Party Lite Gifts and Silpada Jewelry followed by the opening presentation by Linda LoRe, president and CEO Catalyst9 and former president and CEO of Frederick’s of Hollywood.

During lunch, attendees will have a choice from three “Lunch with the Experts” seminars presented by Jenn August (marketing your business), Katy Tafoya (using social media in business) or Robbie Motter (business networking).
