SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTING CLASSES AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is hosting a series of parent education classes focusing on children with special needs and is co-sponsored by the City of La Cañada. This program is free and open to the community. Topics include neurobiological and psychological disorders along with issues that arise from parenting any child with special needs.  The classes meet weekly on Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Y.

DANCEART COMING TO LIBRARY
Benita Bike’s DanceArt performs at the La Crescenta Library on Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. Join us and discover how dances are made and how dance artists train, work and create. Three contemporary dances will be performed and there will be numerous opportunities for audience members to interact with the artists. Benita Bike’s DanceArt will premiere “Currents and Eddies” along with “Entrelazadas” and “Eternal Encounter.”

MOTHER, DAUGHTER BOOK PARTY AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
Eight best selling children authors are taking part in the third annual Mother and Daughter Book Party at Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This event is designed for girls in the third through sixth grades. Girls and their moms will enjoy getting to know these authors as they talk about their books and share about themselves. Lisa Yee, author of “Millicent Min,” has received several awards and is a favorite among all ages. Janet Tashjian, whose latest work “My Life As A Stuntboy,” will delight Wimpy Kid lovers. Maile Meloy’s award winning novel, “The Apothecary,” is a fantasy set in London during the Cold War. Lee Wardlaw’s books are on the Children’s Choice list in several states. She’ll discuss “101 Ways to Bug Your Friends and Enemies.”

Kathy McCullough is a screenwriter for Nickelodeon and ABC Family.  She’s written “Don’t Expect Magic” about a girl who discovers she’s a fairy godmother! Susan Patron, a Newbery Award winner, will talk about her newest book, “The Diary of Angeline Reddy: Behind the Masks.” Kathleen O’Dell is best known for her Agnes Parker Series and will also talk about “The Aviary,” her exciting new mystery with magicians and talking birds.

To round out this group is Kathryn Fizmaurice, a writer of contemporary and historic fiction.

ROSE LEAF RAGTIME CLUB AT AZTEC HOTEL
The Rose Leaf Ragtime Club, now in its 17th year of operation, meets on the last Sunday of every month and will next gather on Jan. 29 at the Aztec Hotel’s Mayan Restaurant from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

There is a suggested donation of $2 (performers are not asked to donate). Ragtime and related types of music, classic and contemporary, are played on one or two upright pianos as well as on other instruments.  Performers, listeners and dancers (there’s a small dance floor) are always welcome.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, is again conducting a series of off-campus music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike. This semester will cover the topic “Popular Music Before the 20th Century.”

Each semester offers new and interesting information. Dr. Stern weaves music examples with cultural history to increase the listener’s understanding of the evolution of music. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church in Montrose.  The weekly series of classes continues through Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and each Tuesday thereafter through May 29. NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

The next concert is on Feb. 1 and features The Malkin – Trybek Duo English, Sephardic & Puerto Rican Music for Voice & Guitar including Iris Malkin – mezzo-soprano and Edward Trybek – guitar.
VERDUGO HILLS ART ASSOCIATION NEWS
Verdugo Hills Art Association presents a watercolor demonstration by Ted Nuttall.

Nuttall is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Watercolor West and Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. He teaches watercolor workshops in portraiture and figure painting for arts leagues and organizations throughout the world. His workshops and private classes have been enjoyed by many who have benefited from his personal and insightful instruction.

The Verdugo Hills Art Assn. next meets at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge, 4469 Chevy Chase Drive, La Canada Flintridge on Friday, Feb. 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

BUSINESS WOMEN HOST EXPO
Verdugo Glen Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is hosting its first Heart of Business Expo” on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Glendale Elks Lodge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event begins with networking and shopping with exhibitors such as Gigi Hill Handbags, Party Lite Gifts and Silpada Jewelry followed by the opening presentation by Linda LoRe, president and CEO Catalyst9 and former president and CEO of Frederick’s of Hollywood.

During lunch, attendees will have a choice from three “Lunch with the Experts” seminars presented by Jenn August (marketing your business), Katy Tafoya (using social media in business) or Robbie Motter (business networking).

ABWA Verdugo Glen is hosting this event to provide networking between area organizations and businesswomen and to assist their members to promote their own businesses.

TEAM HILLSIDE HOSTING E-WASTE FUNDRAISER
Foothills Relay for Life – Team Hillside will be holding an e-waste fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hillside School.

Hillside School and Learning Center will be offering complete electronic waste destruction and recycling services for a fundraiser for Team Hillside.  One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit Team Hillside’s Relay for Life team that is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

The following items are acceptable for destruction and recycling:

CPUs, laptops, hard drives, monitors, printers, fax machines, cellphones, pagers/PDAs, network equipment, circuit boards, cables, floppies, video cassettes, transistors, televisions, keyboards, DVDs/CDs, telecom equipment, DAT or CRT tapes, microcassettes, memory.
