“KING & QUEEN OF HEARTS” CELBRATES 17 YEARS
In honor of National Heart Month, the Heart Center at Glendale Memorial celebrates cardiac patients, their families, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and the community by honoring the king and queen of hearts for 2012.

This event will include several free screenings, informative presentations by Heart Center physicians, as well as low-fat tasty foods. The event will culminate in the crowing of the King and Queen of Hearts.

The event takes place today, Thursday, Feb. 23 with screenings from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the presentation and crowning of the king and queen of hearts from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Glendale Memorial Hospital – Cardiac Fitness Center is located at 1420 S. Central Ave – Second Floor in Glendale.


GYP HOSTS CRAIG LEVRA
The first Glendale Young Professionals (GYP) event takes place today, Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. and features Sport Chalet CEO Craig Levra.

The event takes place at the Hilton Glendale and keynote speaker Levra will discuss his career path and his leadership role at one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers. Following the speaker will be an opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow young professionals over drinks and complimentary appetizers.

The event is sponsored by Massage Envy Spa Glendale and All About You! Wellness Bootcamp, Datastream and Sedna Solutions.

The Glendale Young Professionals (GYP) is a new program of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce that develops, connects and empowers its members while bridging the gap between generations and serving its community.

YOUNG ADULTS NOVELISTS AT ONCE UPON A TIME
Once Upon A Time bookstore is rolling out the red carpet on Friday, Feb. 24 at  7 p.m. for four  talented authors who write Young Adult novels. L.A.-based Marie Lu (“Legend”), Beth Revis (“Across the Universe,” “A Million Suns”), Andrea Cremer (“Nightshade” series) and newcomer Jessica Spotswood (“Born Wicked”) will be at Once Upon A Time.  Moderator for the evening is Glendale’s own mystery writer Denise Hamilton (“Damage Control,” “L.A. Noir” series).

This event is free and open to the public, but in order to go through the signing line, guests must purchase one of the authors’  books from Once Upon A Time, which also ensures entry into the raffle for a Galaxy tablet and other goodies.

BEETHOVEN BASH
The Crescenta Valley Arts Council is proud to present its fifth annual music Bash on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church.  This year features works by the master Ludwig van Beethoven. MONTE CARLO NIGHT
On Saturday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce and the Sunland-Tujunga Elks Lodge is holding its annual Monte Carlo Night at 6 p.m. at the Lodge.

This fundraising event offers fun, entertainment, food and drink and a live auction offering many desirable gifts.

Admission is $25 that includes dinner and $200 in gaming script.

Anyone interested in purchasing a sponsorship for $100 will receive two admission tickets, including dinner for two, and $700 worth of gaming script.

SONS OF NORWAY HOLDING MOVIE NIGHT
Join Sons of Norway Edvard Grieg Lodge on Saturday, Feb. 25 for a cultural evening and movie night.  Norwegiian language class is at 6 p.m., hot dog dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and movie to follow.  This is a free event.  The meeting takes place at Lutheran Church of the Foothills, 1700 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada.

ROSE LEAF RAGTIME CLUB AT AZTEC HOTEL
The Rose Leaf Ragtime Club, now in its 17th year of operation, meets on the last Sunday of every month and will next gather on Feb. 26 at the Aztec Hotel’s Mayan Restaurant from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Special guest performer will be ragtime and stride pianist Bob Pinsker.

There is a suggested donation of $2 (performers are not asked to donate). Ragtime and related types of music, classic and contemporary, are played on one or two upright pianos as well as on other instruments.  Performers, listeners and dancers (there’s a small dance floor) are always welcome.

DEMOCRATIC CLUB TO MEET
The monthly meeting of the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the home of Elisa and Eric Callow. The topic of discussion is The Occupy Movement. Instructors and activists from Occupy Claremont will lead the discussion. Meet those on the front lines of a movement, which has captured support, and criticism, from virtually all points along the political spectrum.  No charge.  Members and newcomers are welcome.

MOSIAC WORKSHOP OFFERED AT COMMUNITY CENTER
The Community Center of La Canada Flintridge is offering a mosaic workshop on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. continuing through March 7.

The course offers a foundation from which participants can continue to design and make mosaics at home. The cost is $120 per participant.

THEODORE PAYNE ART GALLERY HOSTS EXHIBIT
The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants, Inc. is hosting an art exhibit featuring the work of more than 25 artists inspired by the native flora, fauna and the natural landscape found at Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants. The media they utilize include paintings, poems, photography, baskets, gourds, ceramics, watercolors and drawings.

Hung salon-style, the exhibition is one of extraordinary creativity – a survey of the varied styles and mediums in which artists are working today.

This exhibition is sponsored by the Theodore Payne Arts Council and continues through March 24. The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants, Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping others discover the beauty of California native plants.

FREE TAX PREPARATION
Residents can receive free tax preparation under the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program provided through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a tax-exempt charity of AARP.  Membership in AARP is not required.

Free tax preparation can be obtained at La Crescenta County Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. (corner of La Crescenta Avenue) through Friday, April 13.  The hours are Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Taxpayers will be served on a “first-come-first-served” basis; no advanced reservations are available.  Enter from the upper level parking lot.
