CV High School track athletes got their first peek at the competition Saturday in a bout against Canyon High School at home. The meet was the first of two CV would participate as a non-scoring league meet.

Coach Evans likes to use these non-league competitions as a chance to get his athletes prepared and warmed up before hitting his own league meets.

“We use the non-league meets to see where we are and to experiment a little,” explained Evans. “The first meet especially we are trying to find the best fit for each athlete and the team. They also give the athletes a chance to race after a lot of training.”

Returning for CV is veteran James Maturan, a senior who was a strong leader in the sprints and relay last year. Against Canyon, Maturan had a dual win in the 100m (11.1) and the 200m (22.6).

Senior Mike Duncan is expected to be an asset in the middle distance and the 4x400m relay. Duncan won first in the 1600 (4:39) and placed third in the 800m.

Matt Williams, another CV senior, won the 800 (2:02.3) and appeared ready to again give CV strong performances this year.

Junior Gabe Collison had an outstanding day, winning the 3200m (10:18.9).

For the CV girls, returning to the track is sophomore Kayleigh Carrillo who had a dual win in the 100m (12.6) and 200m (26.0). Junior Cali King won the 1600 (5:32.1) and placed second in the 3200m (12:42.7). King is expected to be particularly strong with the middle distance team together with teammate Brook Moultrie, a senior who place second in the 1600 (5:34.6).

Junior Hannah Ruby took second in the 800m and may return to running her 400m next week.

Although Canyon won both varsity divisions, Coach Evans wasn’t fazed.      “Canyon is always a good program,” he said. “They always bring the best out in us.”

Next meets for CV will be against Golden Valley today at Golden Valley in Santa Clarita at 3:15 p.m. and the Canyon Invite at Canyon on Saturday morning.
