The Second Annual Community Forum on Public Education will be held Saturday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pacific Community Center, 501 South Pacific Ave. in Glendale.
The forum, sponsored by the Council PTAs of the 5 Star Coalition including Glendale, Burbank, La Cañada, South Pasadena and Pasadena, will feature guest speaker Dr. Morgan Polikoff of the USC Rossier School of Education. Dr. Polikoff is an assistant professor of K-12 Policy and Leadership who has written about the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind and the design of standards-based assessment systems that are sensitive to the content and quality of teachers’ instruction. He will be addressing current issues surrounding the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and No Child Left Behind.
The forum will also feature Patty Scripter, director of Legislation for the California State PTA. Scripter will be sharing information about the “Our Children, Our Future” ballot initiative co-written by California State PTA and the Advancement Project, which will raise $10 billion a year over a period of 12 years, for public education and children’s services. California State PTA is working with civil rights attorney and president of the Advancement Project Molly Munger to qualify this initiative for the November 2012 ballot. Attendance for the forum is free, but guests are being asked to register at ptaforum.info. Event check in will begin at 8:30 a.m.
